Modelo de referência para o processo de desenvolvimento de produtos mecatrônicos (MRM): validação e resultados de uso

Sanderson César Macêdo Barbalho; Henrique Rozenfeld

This paper presents a reference model for the development of mechatronic products (MRM) emphasizing the model validation by making improvements in the new product development (NPD) of a manufacturing company. The model was applied and validated through an action research. The model content was summarized and its application and validation methodology was presented. The improvements increased the companys NPD capability even for those who work on the process but who were not involved in the process implementation. The latter reported a perceived improvement in time, cost, and quality of NPD. The most significant results occurred in document control and product configurations due to regulatory aspects of medical devices. Although there have been significant investments in the project management area, the time and cost control results were limited by aspects related to the integration between engineering and marketing personnel.

Funções dos escritórios de projetos no desenvolvimento de produtos: pesquisa-ação em empresa de alta tecnologia

Sanderson César Macêdo Barbalho; José Carlos de Toledo; Junia Rojic; Matheus de Aguiar Sillos

The article presents a Project Management Office (PMO) for supporting project management activities in new product development (NPD). The established practices centered on PMO activities differ from the functions that characterize them, as described in the literature. The functions performed are material planning and control, which are activities that provide projects with the materials and components necessary for the assembly of prototypes and products. The functions of the PMO are compared to the activities listed in the bibliography. The indicators of efficiency and effectiveness of projects are presented. There was a reduction of lead times by 90% in manufacturing and by 75% in purchases. The duration of projects decreased by 43%. The role assumed by the PMO can enhance the theoretical options for structuring Project Management Offices in NPD.

Benefits Management as a Path for Project Management Offices Contribute to Programs and Influence on Project Performance

Vaniele Guimarães de Carvalho; Sanderson César Macêdo Barbalho; Gladston Luiz da Silva; José Carlos de Toledo

This paper analyses the relationships between the Project Management Offices (PMOs) functions and the results of performance indicators of product development projects, considering the triple constraint: time, cost, quality. A survey was conducted on a sample of 35 Brazilian manufacturing companies, which have a Product Development Process and a support of PMO for product projects. Although the survey´s results pointed out the presence of Project Management Offices on companies’ structure, it does not guarantee the success on project´s triple constraints, the benefits management was a PMO function correlated to cost performance. It suggests that if a company structure projects as programs, an effort to guarantee the focus on benefits rather than only on project’s results can drive good performance on costs.

The project-based learning (PBL) approach has been a part of the University of Brasilias programme from the inception of its Industrial Engineering syllabus. Production Systems Project 4 course is one among eight courses that drive the utilization of PBL approach at the curriculum, the subject of this study, in which we present a set of analyses of the projects developed between 2013 and 2016. The projects involved real-world problems, related to public and private sector enterprises in Brazil’s Federal District. The conducted analyses aimed to identify the organizations’ profiles and the PPC (Production Planning and Control) techniques which were used to achieve project objectives. Therefore, statistical analyses were performed, such as Correlation Analysis, Cluster Analysis, as well as qualitative documental analysis. The results of this study indicate the profile of external partners that have the highest probability of achieving satisfactory results, as well as the main planning elements which impact the final grades of the projects.

Ana Carla Bittencourt Reis; Sanderson César Macêdo Barbalho; Alline Christine Diniz Zanette

Engineering education has been the subject of studies in search of approaches that provide better results in terms of learning. The Project Based Learning approach (PBL) is the subject of this study from the point of view of its application in Engineering. The objective is to present a classification and bibliometric analysis of PBL in Engineering. Publications on the subject were identified through queries at the journal databases at ISI Web of Science and Scopus SCImago between 2000 and 2016. The results highlight the benefits from the use of the PBL approach to learning in Engineering showing increased absorption of technical content by students and the development of soft and multi-disciplinary skills. The bibliometric analysis revealed the most relevant journals in the subject, authors and the most cited papers and keywords. New horizons to advance the use of PBL in engineering education are discussed.

Contribuições do escritório de projetos à gestão do portfólio de produtos

Daniel Jugend; Sanderson César Macêdo Barbalho; Sérgio Luis da Silva

Although many studies have investigated the project management office, and substantial research has also examined product portfolio management, few studies have analyzed these elements together. This paper aims to identify how the project management office can contribute to product portfolio management. The research consists of a case study at a high-tech company where the product portfolio is continuously renewed and that features a well-established project management office. Among the main results, it was observed that the project management offices participation is greater during portfolio review decisions than during decisions related to the strategic planning of products. Furthermore, the project management office supports top management and the project teams in applying financial methods and in the mapping and evaluation phases during product portfolio management activities.

Caracterização do perfil e dos principais direcionadores de transições em escritórios de projetos: Estudo de caso longitudinal em uma empresa de alta tecnologia

Sanderson César Macêdo Barbalho; José Carlos de Toledo

Through the longitudinal case study approach, this paper aims to present and analyze the evolutionary change of the procedure and performance of a technology-based company Project Management Office (PMO). The study has exploratory character and focuses on understanding the factors that motivated the transitions occurring in the PMO over 13 years of experience. To this end, information was raised on the functions performed by the PMO during this period, as well as its relations with managers and project teams, functional managers and senior management. Representative performance data about projects and PMO are presented. It was found that experienced tensions are the main drivers of change, which are determined by the functions and results shown by the office. The study allowed the construction of a framework to explain the transitions that reach PMO, which can be used to conduct more comprehensive studies in more descriptive character.
