Shielding Effectiveness of Protective Metallic Wire Meshes: EM Modeling and Validation

Maria Sabrina Sarto; Sandra Greco; Alessio Tamburrano

An effective-layer model is proposed to predict the EM shielding performances of metallic wire grids typically used as protective layers in carbon fiber-reinforced composite laminates for aeronautical applications. The model is valid over a wide frequency range and it takes into account the field penetration through the grating. The shielding performance of the wire grid is estimated by means of the average shielding effectiveness, which represents the response of the material to an incident plane wave having both transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric polarizations. The proposed model is validated by comparison with experimental data, which demonstrates its validity over a wide frequency range, up to 18 GHz.

A new structure of transparent films for heat control and electromagnetic shielding of windows

M. D'Amore; Sandra Greco; D.A. Lampasi; Maria Sabrina Sarto; Alessio Tamburrano

Experimental tests highlight that transparent films used for thermal control in windows can be successfully adopted to obtain electromagnetic shielding in the radio frequency range. New multifunctional sandwich-structures consisting of commercial films over a glass layer are investigated. Electromagnetic, optical, and thermal performances are predicted and optimized by using the developed simulation codes. Numerical and measured frequency spectra of the shielding effectiveness and optical transmittance of the realized multilayer structures are shown.

Shielding performances of ITO transparent windows: Theoretical and experimental characterization

Sandra Greco; Maria Sabrina Sarto; Alessio Tamburrano

The shielding performance of indium-titanium-oxide (ITO) thin film depends on the characteristics of the impinging electromagnetic field, on the geometry of the shield, and on the frequency range. In this paper, a complete experimental characterization of the shielding effectiveness of ITO transparent windows is performed by using three different approaches. The obtained results are compared in order to define the limit of applicability of each technique. In addition, numerical simulations are performed by applying the finite-difference time-domain method in order to assess the effects of the geometry of the test configuration on the obtained results.

Electromagnetic Characterization of a Field Sensor for the Localization of GSM Cellular Phones Aboard an Aircraft

Sandra Greco; D.A. Lampasi; Maria Sabrina Sarto

This paper describes an innovative test procedure for the characterization of a new field sensor prototype sensitive to amplitude-modulated signals and designed to be installed as a detector unit in an intelligent network for the localization of global system for mobile communications (GSM) cellular phones aboard an aircraft. The response of the sensor, expressed by the activation probability in a given operative condition, is obtained as a function of frequency, voltage supply, and incident field level.

EM modeling and design of electrically thin laminated absorbers

Sandra Greco; Maria Sabrina Sarto

The paper describes an equivalent circuit approach for the analysis and the electromagnetic design of innovative thin absorbers. The use of thin bilayers of metamaterials as spacer in dielectric Salisbury screen is discussed. It is demonstrated that narrow-band thin absorbers can be obtained using both positive and negative materials, whereas broad-band thin absorbing screen can be realized only with bilayer of epsilon-negative and mu-negative materials.
