The building technique of light wooden framing, or woodframe, represents a great innovative goal of construction, due to the very efficient levels of rationalization of material, operational flexibility and productive agility. In addition, excessive use of natural materials of renewable character in the woodframes, as the wood of planted forests, contributes to sustainability, a desired factor in most modern homes. In recent years, Latin American countries have suffered from the constant housing deficit, which destroys the possibilities of the first property by the neediest populations. Therefore, it is necessary to propagate studies, research and information on industrialized housing construction techniques, such as woodframe. This study focused on the exhibition of this innovative wooden building typology, emphasizing its advantages, importance, types, and its current panorama in countries in development stage, such as the countries of Latin America. Currently, woodframe is known as a modern wooden residential technique, and it is conquering the public of all kind of economic classes, because of its innovation, lightness, competitive costs, and also efficient levels of sustainability, cleanness, assembly time, and rationalization of raw materials.

This article presents some results of the environmental and organisational aspects that were obtained from a preliminary analysis of the process of manufacturing upholstered furniture at the furniture cluster in the State of Alagoas, Brazil. The method is based on the concepts of pollution prevention and cleaner production that are associated to the concept of product life cycle design. Data were collected through interviews with employees and from direct observation in the company selected for the study case. The results indicate the need for further studies to identify possible modifications in the product and/or in the processes of development of the upholstered furniture produced by the cluster. The partial conclusions suggest the need for the future application of life cycle assessment in one of the upholstered pieces of furniture to broaden the scope of analysis and improve the efficiency of production through cleaner environmental practices. The original character of the study is associated with the dissemination and incentive of the application of life cycle assessment in micro and small businesses in the Furniture Cluster in the town of Arapiraca in the State of Alagoas, in the Northeast of Brazil.

The aim of this paper is to record the pieces of fabric handcraft, produced by the Community Quilombola of Giral Grande, located in Maragojipe, Recôncavo. It is an indicator of their cultural identity as well as represents a factor of livelihood for a portion of its members. This identity, in turn, becomes a factor essential to the process of legitimation of local land ownership, guaranteed by the Brazilian 1988 Constitution.

The search for solutions that might promote the environmental preservation is a great challenge to be faced because of the increasingly depletion of natural resources that are used by society. To use more sustainable building material can be a way of reducing environmental damages and the generation of waste. Builds using earth have characteristics of sustainability and they are recommended in places where there is, already, the tradition of the use of this technique, once this is an abundant and propitious resource for edification. The adobe brick can contribute for a sustainable development in the civil construction if made of raw clay and if used in a large scale basis. In this article, there are presented recommendations for building that uses adobe brick, based on the Norm NTE E.080:2000 – Adobe from Peru and based on the building techniques that are adopted by constructors that use this material in the State of Bahia – Brazil At first we analyze the constructive processes that have been adopted by constructors from Bahia comparing to what Peruvian Norm professes and what can be found in the bibliography about this subject. In the end recommendations are made for the building of adobe brick in order to guarantee the effective protection and conservation of the brickwork made with this material and that provides safety and durability of edifications.
