What drives successful social networking services? A comparative analysis of user acceptance of Facebook and Twitter

Sang Jib Kwon; Eunil Park; Ki Joon Kim

Abstract This study identifies perceived mobility, security, connectedness, system and service quality, usefulness, attitude, and flow experience as key motivational factors for using social networking services (SNSs), and develops a theoretical model that explicates the process in which users adopt Facebook and Twitter by integrating these factors with the technology acceptance model (TAM). While results of structural equation modeling (SEM) on the collected data (N = 2,214) verified the validity and reliability of the research model, Facebook and Twitter users were found to emphasize different motivational factors when deciding to use SNSs. The implications of notable findings and directions for future studies are discussed.

Case study: Renewable electricity generation systems on Geoje Island in South Korea

Eunil Park; Kyeongsik Yoo; Jay Y. Ohm; Sang Jib Kwon

Since the concept of “green growth” has become a main growth strategy for South Korea, the South Korean Government has consistently invested in the distribution and installation of renewable power generation systems, such as recommending that island communities install renewable power generation systems to reduce the cost of maintaining and operating the electricity grid system linking the islands to the mainland. Given the South Korean energy industrys heavy dependence on nuclear and fossil fuels, such renewable power generation systems are advised for both mainland and island communities. Therefore, the current study uses the Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources (HOMER) program software to explore possible solutions to the installation and operation of independent and renewable electricity generation systems on Geoje Island, the second largest island in South Korea. The results show that photovoltaic panels, batteries, wind turbines, and converters can be used to organize such a system on Geoje Island. This study presents an optimized electricity generation system in the context of the total net present cost, fraction of renewables, and cost of energy (COE). The suggested system presents a 1.00 fraction of renewables at a COE of

Innovation activities and the creation of new employment: An empirical assessment of South Korea’s manufacturing industry

Sang Jib Kwon; Eunil Park; Jay Y. Ohm; Kyeongsik Yoo

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify motivational factors for using wearable healthcare devices and examine the process by which these factors are integrated with the technology acceptance model (TAM) and contribute to the adoption of the devices. Design/methodology/approach An online survey assessed the proposed motivational factors for the adoption of wearable healthcare devices. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were conducted on collected data (n=877) to demonstrate the reliability and validity of the measurement and structural model. Findings Perceived control and interactivity of wearable healthcare devices as well as users’ innovative tendencies are positively associated with usage intention, while perceived cost has no significant effects on user intention to use the devices. The results also supported the explanatory strength and predictability of TAM. Originality/value Although the promising role of wearable devices in healthcare industries has gained much consumer attention, limited empirical investigations have been conducted on explicating how user attitude and usage intention are shaped regarding the devices. This study serves as one of the first attempts to empirically examine the adoption process, with implications for the future usage of wearable technology in the healthcare context.

What is the Right R&D Strategy for Overcoming the Difficulties of the South Korean IT Industry?

Eunil Park; Sang Jib Kwon; Heetae Kim; Jay Young Ohm; Hyun Joon Chang

The study proposes an integrated model to explore the effects of different innovation strategies on the creation of new employment. To verify the model, 532 manufacturing firms in South Korea were investigated. The results indicated that firms’ product innovation strategies had notable positive effects on firms’ creation of new employment, whereas firms’ process innovation strategies were negatively associated with the creation of new employment. Compared with the significant effects of the process innovation and product innovation processes, the activities of both user-centred innovation and organizational innovation were not significantly related to the creation of new employment. On the basis of the statistical results, both practical and academic implications are presented.

The adoption of teaching assistant robots: a technology acceptance model approach

Eunil Park; Sang Jib Kwon

This study proposes new strategies for the information technology (IT) industry in South Korea, provides objectives for the South Korean IT industry and articulates the roles of the Korean government agencies, companies and users. Specifically, it covers South Korean IT strategies employed during several periods, including a stagnant period and a more recent period reflecting new successful IT environments of developed countries. South Korean IT companies should recognize the importance of user interface and user experience technologies as a next key global IT industry trend. Raising this awareness is critical in increasing the global competitiveness of the Korean IT industry. Furthermore, South Korean government agencies should take more active role in constructing and improving interactive environments that would benefit both companies and users. For future research, it is imperative to investigate the specific roles of companies, users and government agencies with respect to IT usage.

Effects of innovation types on firm performance: an empirical approach in South Korean manufacturing industry

Eunil Park; Sang Jib Kwon

Based on rapid improvements in telecommunications and wireless networks with extensive educational contents, numerous studies have been conducted to improve our educational success/attainment/environment. With this trend, the purpose of this paper is to investigate users’ perceptions of teaching assistant (TA) robots and the possible motivations that impact the users’ intention to use (IU) the robots.,In light of the rapid development of and attempts at understanding interactions with social robots, including TA robots, this study uses structural equation modeling and confirmatory factor analysis.,The results indicated that perceived usefulness was the most crucial factor determining the users’ IU for TA robots. In addition, the relationships of the original technology acceptance model were confirmed. The study findings demonstrated the crucial importance of perceived enjoyment and service quality.,Although the role of TA robots has gained user attention, few investigations have been conducted to explain how IU is formed. The current study can thus act as the foundation for exploring the acceptance process in the context of TA robots.

Evaluation of automobile navigation systems with multisensory information channels

Eunil Park; Ki Joon Kim; Sang Jib Kwon

In recent years, the innovation paradigm has changed from a closed to open strategy. Open innovation is currently considered as one of the hottest topics in business and management research. Although the understanding of the current innovation paradigm has improved in the last decade, a number of unexplored questions still remain. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate the relationships among closed and open innovation strategies, R&D performance, and firm performance in South Korean manufacturing industry. This study attempted to determine the types of innovation strategies that contribute to R&D and firm performance. Using a structural equation modelling method with the data of 837 firms in South Korea, it was found that closed innovation strategy is stronger than open innovation strategy, and the effects of open innovation strategy on R&D and firm performance are marginal in the manufacturing industry. Furthermore, multidimensional relationships were identified in the integrated model. Both implications and limitations are presented.

ABSTRACT Although automobile navigation systems have conventionally utilised visual and auditory modalities to deliver information, recent advancement in tactile technology has introduced the possibility of integrating tactile actuators into navigation systems. To empirically test the effect of tactile navigational cues, we conducted simulated driving experiments in which participants (N = 96) were exposed to four sets of information modalities (visual, visual + auditory, visual + tactile, and visual + auditory + tactile). The results indicate that multisensory systems including tactile cues allow participants to respond faster to unexpected road events and impart greater satisfaction with the overall driving experience. The implications and limitations of these findings are discussed.

Examining the effects of information sources on individual earning rates in the South Korean stock market

Eunil Park; Sang Jib Kwon

BackgroundThis study identifies the key motivational factors in enhancing economic performance and increasing new job opportunities for information and communication technology ventures (ICTVs) in South Korea and examines their potential causal relationships through structural equation modeling analysis on data collected from over 200 ICTVs located in Daedeok Innopolis.ResultsThe results indicate that the economic performance of ICTVs is determined mainly by government support, innovation effort, and private equity and support. Government support and innovation effort are also positively associated with new job opportunities.ConclusionsThe theoretical, industrial implications of the key findings, and recommendations for the Korean government are discussed.
