Neural responses in rat brain during acute immobilization stress: A [F-18]FDG micro PET imaging study

We used the [F-18]FDG micro PET neuroimaging technique to investigate changes in brain activity induced by acute stress in rats. Animals were given immobilization stress for 1 or 2 h, or 1-h stress followed by 1-h recovery, after which their brains were scanned. Plasma corticosterone levels measured at various time points in separate groups of rats showed a rapid increase during stress and slower decrease after termination of the stress. Immobilization stress given for an hour activated the hypothalamus, entorhinal and insular/piriform cortices, and raphe pallidus nucleus. At the same time, the dorsal hippocampus, thalamus, other cortical areas (motor, somatosensory and barrel field), striatum, superior colliculus and cerebellum were deactivated. With 2-h immobilization stress, the activity of the hypothalamus, various cortical areas and dorsal hippocampus habituated during the second hour while that of the thalamus and cerebellum did not. During 1-h recovery, the hypothalamic activation and widespread cortical deactivation disappeared, but the dorsal hippocampus, thalamus and cerebellum still remained significantly deactivated. Additional brain areas such as the septum and prelimbic cortex now showed deactivation during recovery. Changes in glucose metabolism in the dorsal hippocampus and hypothalamus exhibited a highly significant negative correlation, supporting the view that the hippocampus is involved in regulating the stress response of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis. The advantages and limitations of the [F-18]FDG micro PET used in this study are discussed.

Upregulation of heme oxygenase-1 in oral epithelial dysplasias

The expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), stress-related enzyme, is induced in leukaemia and some cancer tissues, but relatively little is known about the differential pattern of HO-1 expression and proliferation in premalignant lesions of the epithelial oral mucosa. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether HO-1 expression and proliferation were increased in preneoplastic lesions compared to normal and oral cancer tissues. Immunohistochemical staining was used to examine the expression patterns of HO-1 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in a series of normal mucosa and mild-to-severe cases of oral epithelial dysplasia (OED) and oral squamous cell carcinoma. Both HO-1 and PCNA are expressed in the basal cells of normal oral mucosa. In patients with OED and carcinoma in situ, immunostaining for PCNA and HO-1 was more intense, and gradually extended into the superficial layers of the mucosa. HO-1 and PCNA expression was correlated with the degree of epithelial dysplasia. Oral squamous cell carcinoma also showed elevated expression of HO-1, but this level was not higher than in severe OED or carcinoma in situ. These results suggest that the up-regulation of HO-1 in premalignant oral lesions is part of an early cytoprotection mechanism against carcinogenesis in the oral mucosa.

Effects of electro-acupuncture therapy on post-stroke depression in patients with different degrees of motor function impairments: a pilot study.

[Purpose] The present study examined whether electro-acupuncture therapy reduces post-stroke depression (PSD) and whether motor function impairments interact with the effects of the therapy. [Subjects] Twenty-eight PSD patients were assessed and assigned to either a good or poor motor function group depending on their motor grade. [Methods] The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Manual Muscle Test (MMT) were administered at the screening and initial phases of the study, and at the 4th, 8th, 12th and 16th week of the daily electro-acupuncture treatment. [Results] The electro-acupuncture treatment reduced PSD (as assessed by BDI and HDRS) of the patients. In particular, the depression of the good motor function group was significantly more reduced than that of the poor motor function group. The degree of motor function impairment did not change throughout the study in either group. [Conclusion] The results of the present study demonstrate that electro-acupuncture therapy can improve PSD, and that the treatment effect varies depending on the degree of motor function impairment.

Electro-magnetic properties of composites with aligned Fe-Co hollow fibers

A novel Fe-Co binary hollow fiber was synthesized by electroless plating using hydrolyzed polyester fiber and its anisotropy characteristic was investigated for electromagnetic wave absorbing materials. The hollow fibers in parallel with magnetic field show higher saturated magnetization of 202 emu/g at the applied magnetic field of 10 kOe and lower coercivity (27.658 Oe), compared with the random and vertical oriented hollow fibers. From complex permittivity measurement, the Fe-Co hollow fiber composites clearly display a single dielectric resonance, located at ∼14 GHz. The Fe-Co hollow fibers not only provide excellent EM properties in GHz frequency ranges, resulting mainly from the strong resonance, but also adjust the soft magnetic properties through fiber alignments. The cavitary structure of the Fe-Co hollow fibers, not only giving rise to a dielectric loss resonance and also adjusting its peak frequency, may be a pathway to useful EM wave absorptive devices in GHz frequency ranges.

Determination of effective treatment duration of interferential current therapy using electromyography

[Purpose] This study used electromyography to measure the effective treatment duration of interferential current therapy for muscle fatigue. [Subjects and Methods] Fifteen healthy adult men volunteered to participate in the study (age: 24.2 ± 1.3 years; weight: 67.6 ± 4.92 kg; height: 176.4 ± 4.92 cm). All subjects performed 5 min of isometric back extension exercise to produce muscle fatigue, and were then treated with interferential current therapy for 15 min, with electromyography monitoring (treatment group). After sufficient rest, the exercise was repeated for 5 min and an electromyography signal was acquired for 15 min with no treatment (control group). [Results] In the treatment group, the median frequency shifted to a higher level; the root mean square decreased over time, and then maintained a minimum amplitude. However, there were few changes in the electromyography signal after exercise in the control group. [Conclusion] Electromyography signals can provide information about the effective duration for muscle fatigue treatment as well as the muscle characteristics during treatment. This study should be helpful for clinicians by demonstrating the appropriate duration of therapy for relief of muscle stiffness.

Evaluation of Diffuse Reflectance in Multi-layered Tissue for High Intensity Laser Therapy

Pain is one of the quite common symptoms in clinics and many treatment methods have been applied to relieve pain. Among the treatments, high-intensity light therapy for pain has been introduced, but this therapy has not been fully supported by confirmed efficacy due to the absence of quantitative assessments and treatment feedback data in real time. In this study, the evaluation of light distribution in tissue was performed with current high-intensity light sources quantitatively using light-tissue interaction simulations. The diffuse reflectance in tissue was generated using Monte Carlo simulation that traces photons as they undergo multiple scattering and absorption within each tissue layer (skin, fat, and muscle) and within multi-layered tissue. The results showed that the highest diffuse reflectance and the deepest penetration of tissue were achieved at λ=830 nm when compared with other wavelengths like λ=650 nm, 980 nm and 1064 nm.

The Cortisol Awakening Response in Patients with Poststroke Depression Is Blunted and Negatively Correlated with Depressive Mood.

It is important to reduce poststroke depression (PSD) to improve the stroke outcomes and quality of life in stroke patients, but the underlying mechanisms of PSD are not completely understood. As many studies implicate dysregulation of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in the etiology of major depression and stroke, we compared the cortisol awakening response (CAR) of 28 admitted PSD patients with that of 23 age-matched caregiver controls. Saliva samples for cortisol measurement were collected immediately, 15, 30, and 45 min after awakening for two consecutive days. Depressive mood status in PSD patients was determined with Beck Depression Inventory and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. Salivary cortisol levels of PSD patients did not rise significantly at any sampling time, showing a somewhat flat curve. Caregiver controls showed significantly higher CAR at 15 and 30 min after awakening compared to PSD patients even though the two groups did not differ at awakening or 45 min after awakening. Area-under-the-curve analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between the CAR and the degree of depression in PSD patients. Thus, our findings suggest that poststroke depression is closely related with dysfunctional HPA axis indicated by blunted CAR.

Fabrication and electromagnetic properties of fe nanofibers composites

In order to develop electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbing materials in the giga-hertz (GHz) frequency range, Fe nanofibers have been prepared by multi-nozzle electrospinning process (ESP) and heat treatments. The effects of applied voltage and feed rate on the morphology of electrospun PVP/Fe salt nanofibers have been studied in the electrospinning process. The average diameter and the standard deviation of electrospun nanofibers tend to decrease with the increase of the applied voltage and the decrease of the feed rate, respectively. Through the heat treatments of calcination and H2 reduction, as-spun PVP/Fe salt has been stepwise transformed into Fe2O3, Fe3O4, and Fe phases. To evaluate the EM characteristic of the prepared Fe nanofibers, epoxy matrix composites containing Fe nanofibers of 10 and 30 wt% have been fabricated. The Fe nanofibers have improved the EM characteristics of composites as compared to those of nano-sized metallic particles.

Optical Spectroscopic Analysis of Muscle Spasticity for Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Current therapeutic methods for suppressing muscle spasticity are intensive functional training, surgery, or pharmacological interventions. However, these methods have not been fully supported by confirmed efficacy due to the aggravation of the muscle spasticity in some patients. In this study, a combined system was developed to treat with a low-level laser and to monitor the region of the treatment using an optical spectroscopic probe that measures oxygen saturation and deoxygenation during low-level laser therapy (LLLT). The evaluation of the wavelength dependence for LLLT was performed using a Monte Carlo simulation and the results showed that the greatest amount of heat generation was seen in the deep tissue at λ = 830 nm. In the oxy- and deoxygenation measurements during and after the treatment, oxygen-Hb concentration was significantly increased in the laser-irradiated group when compared to the control group. These findings suggest that LLLT using λ = 830 nm may be of benefit in accelerating recovery of muscle spasticity. The combined system that we have developed can monitor the physiological condition of muscle spasticity during the laser treatment in real time and may also be applied to various myotonia conditions such as muscle fatigue, back-pain treatment/monitoring, and ulcer due to paralysis.

The Study on toxicity and biological activities of Aconiti ciliare tuber Pharmacopuncture in Rats Original Articles

Objective : We investigate toxicity of Aconiti ciliare tuber and antioxidant activity of Aconiti ciliare tuber Pharmacopuncture to develop safe Aconiti ciliare tuber Pharmacopuncture and find out the effect. Methods : In order to investigate toxicity of Aconiti ciliare tuberm, we administered Aconiti ciliare tuberm orally to rats and examined the survival rate, comparing with the survival rate of rats administered by Radix aconitum simmered with Semen Glycine and Radix Glycyrrhizae. We examined the in vitro biological activity of Aconiti ciliare tuber Pharmacopuncture, including the total polyphenol content, and ABTS radical scavenging. Results and Conclusions :
