Report on Four Species of Crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) from Korea

One pilumnoid, Neoactumnus convexus Sakai, 1965, and three xanthoids, Lybia caestifera (Alcock, 1898), Atergatopsis germaini A. Milne-Edwards, 1865, and Platypodia tomentosa (De Man, 1902), are newly recorded in Korean fauna. Korean pilumnoids and xanthoids now consist of fifteen species and twenty species, respectively.

New Report of Majoid Crab, Pugettia intermedia (Crustacea: Decapoda: Majoidea) from Korea

As a result of continuous taxonomic investigations of Korean crabs, Pugettia intermedia Sakai, 1938 is newly reported from Korean waters. Pugettia intermedia had previously been reported in Korean fauna, but the previous reports of P. intermedia were resulted in misidentification of P. quadridens (De Haan, 1839). Pugettia intermedia differs from P. quadridens in having two subequal medial lobes of the first pleopod in male. In P. quadridens, one of the two medial lobes is about half-length of the other. Pugettia intermedia occurs on the southern coast of the Korean peninsula. The descriptions and illustrations of this species are provided herein.

New Record of Two Opossum Shrimps (Crustacea: Mysida: Mysidae) from Korea

The order Mysida Haworth, 1825 consists of four families. Of these, only family Mysidae Dana, 1850 has been reported in Korea. Two opossum shrimps, Nipponomysis calcarata Takahashi and Murano, 1986 and Exacanthomysis japonica Murano, 1991 belonging to the tribe Mysini of Mysidae, are reported for the first time from Korean waters. The present study is the second report of these two species in the world. The illustrations and descriptions of these species are provided herein. As a result of this study, 47 species of opossum shrimps including N. calcarata and E. japonica are now recorded on the mysids in Korean fauna.

New Report of Two Xanthid Crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) from Korea

Two species of xanthids, Actaea polyacantha (Heller, 1861) and Actaeodes hirsutissimus (Ruppell, 1830) collected from Jejudo Island, are newly recorded from Korean waters. Korean Xanthidae now consists of 22 species belonging to twenty genera.

New Report of the Varunid Crabs, Hemigrapsus takanoi and Sestrostoma toriumii (Crustacea: Decapoda: Varunidae) from Korea

As a result of continuous taxonomic studies on the Korean crabs, two varunid crabs, Hemigrapsus takanoi Asakura and Watanabe, 2005 and Sestrostoma toriumii (Takeda, 1974), are newly reported from Korean waters. Hemigrapsus takanoi, as a sibling species of H. penicillatus, has not been recognized in Korean waters, and this species occurs in the sympatric habitat with H. penicillatus in the Korean peninsula. Sestrostoma toriumii (Takeda, 1974) is associated with thallassinid Upogebia major (De Haan, 1841) and echiuran Urechis unicintus (Von Drache, 1881) as the case of S. balssi (Shen, 1932). The Korean S. toriumii showed smaller size than those mentioned in the original description. Their illustrations and pictures are provided with descriptions, and the distributions of these species in the Korean peninsula are also provided.

First Report of the Mantid Shrimp Faughnia formosae (Stomatopoda: Parasquillidae) from Korea

The stomatopods are aggressive predatory marine crustaceans, which are mainly found in tropical and subtropical regions. Among these, a parasquillid stomatopod, Faughnia formosae Manning and Chan, 1997, collected from Jeju Island, is reported for the first time in Korea. The family is easily distinguished from other families by the presence of an asymmetrically bilobed cornea, stout propodus on the raptorial claw, and three primary spines of the uropodal protopod. In the paper, detailed descriptions and illustrations of this species are provided alongside a photograph. A key to the species of Korean mantis shrimp is also presented. As a result of this study, four species of stomatopods including this species are now recorded in Korean fauna.

First Report of Stilt Crab Crossotonotus spinipes (Decapoda: Palicoidea: Crossotonotidae) from Korea

A stilt crab Crossotonotus spinipes (De Man, 1888) is newly reported from Korean waters as a result of continuous taxonomic studies on crabs. The present specimen has a row of tubercles and a longitudinal lobe with denticles on the dorsal border of the propodus of the chelipeds, and a shorter Pereopod 5. The description and illustration of this species are provided.

Redescription of Hopolophrys oatesii (Decapoda: Majoidea: Pisidae) from Korea

A taxonomic study on Hoplophrys oatesii Henderson, 1893 was conducted with materials collected from Jejudo Island of Korea by SCUBA diving. H. oatesii is redescribed with some remarks on variations of dactylus and the number of segments of abdomen. The Korean Pisid fauna now consists of seven species of five genera.

Isolation and characterization of microsatellite markers for the endangered crab species Sesarmops intermedius

Sesarmops intermedius, which is designated as an endangered species in Korea, has been severely threatened by habitat destruction and pollution. From this species, we isolated 9 polymorphic microsatellites, which are independent of each other and represent allele frequencies under the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, except for 1 locus. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 7 to 20. The expected and observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.77 to 0.96 and from 0.63 to 0.95, respectively. We also examined cross-species amplification of the 9 developed microsatellite loci in 2 other crabs designated as endangered species in Korea and 6 sesarmid crabs, which live in habitats similar to that of S. intermedius. These markers have the potential to contribute to establishing conservation plans for this endangered crab species.

New Report of Three Xanthid Crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Xanthidae) from Korea

Xanthid crabs, decapod crustacean, with the black coloured fingers, are easily found under rocks or stones in the intertidal or subtidal zones. Two xanthids, Etisus laevimanus Randall, 1840 and Paraxanthias elegans (Stimpson, 1858), were newly reported in Korean waters as part of continuous taxonomic studies on crabs. The genus Paraxanthias Odhner, 1925 was also reported for the first time in Korea. Of these, the examined specimen of P. elegans showed eight feathery hairs on the subdistal tip of the first gonopod, which differs from the description of Dai and Yang at 1991. Here, the descriptions and illustrations of these species are provided. Korean Xanthoidea currently consists of 30 species belonging to 25 genera.
