Sang-Woon Nam; Young-Shik Kim; Gi-Hyuk Ko; In-Mo Sung

Dimensions, operation conditions and improvement items for round roof windows were investigated in arch shape single-span plastic greenhouse with roof vents, and natural ventilation performance was analyzed based on the ventilation theory. Diameter of round roof windows was mostly 60 cm, and chimney height projected on roof was average 30 cm. Installation space was mostly 5 to 6 m but farmhouse of 10 m and over was 16.7% also. A round roof window which has 60 cm diameter was installed to 6 m space generally and 80 cm diameter was installed to 10 m space, but correct standards did not exist. There were a lot of opinions that ventilation effect of round roof windows is fairly good and user satisfaction is generally excellent. It is problem that there is few effects in summer and that vinyl around each vent tears well and rainwater leaks, and improvement hope item required development of automatic control system. In the wind speed of 0.3 m/s, it was estimated that natural ventilation rates were 0.69, 0.55, 0.50 and 0.48 volumes per minute in case of 2, 4, 6 and 8 m installation space for round roof windows, respectively. It was analyzed that the ratio of ventilation due to buoyancy out of total ventilation were 65.2, 41.9, 29.9 and 22.8% in case of 2, 4, 6 and 8m installation space, respectively. By the round roof windows installed at space of 6 m, ventilation rate was estimated to 0.5 volumes per minute, and we can expect the increase in ventilation rate of 30%. In order to meet the recommended ventilation rate for summer season, we have to install the round roof windows at space of 1 to 2 m. However, it is difficult to apply those installation space because of falling productivity due to lower light transmittance as well as rising costs. It is estimated that the installation space of 6m is appropriate for spring or fall season. Therefore it is necessary to encourage installing the roof windows in single-span plastic greenhouses.

Dae-Sik Kim; Sang-Woon Nam

A Study on Application of New & Renewable Energy for Environmental-friendly Planning of Rural Villages - Analysis of Solar Energy Resources -

Sang-Woon Nam; Dae-Sik Kim

Solar energy, which is one of renewable energy, would be the most useful resources that can be applied to making energy recycling villages without using fossil energy. This study analyzed energy potential on solar energy considering weather condition in three traditional villages and compared with energy consumption surveyed. A photovoltaic system having 3.0kWp capacity of unit module can generate 182.5%, 96.1% and 170.9% of the yearly mean consumption of electric power in Makhyun, Boojang, and Soso, respectively. A flat-plate solar collector having area of unit module can generate warm water of /day, /day, and /day, respectively in three study villages. In Makhyun and Soso, photovoltaic power and warm water produced by solar energy were sufficient to supply required amount of electric power and warm water. However, both electric power and warm water produced by unit solar module were not sufficient in Boojang area, and so it is required to increase the module area by more than 50%. According to the results of this study, the appropriate combination of energy resources can be applied to rural green-village planning if the characteristic of energy potential for each local area is considered.

An Investigation and Analysis on Actual Condition of Energy Utilizations in Farmhouse for Environmental-friendly Planning of Rural Villages

Sang-Woon Nam; Dae-Sik Kim

Actual states of energy utilizations were investigated and analyzed on three representative rural villages in Chungcheongnam-Do. Rural residents were almost using the ondol boiler as a heating facility and oil(diesel, kerosene) and electricity(night thermal-storage power service) as a heating energy. There were a few households using briquette or firewood in a fuel hole with Korean hypocaust. Most of their cooking facilities were gas ranges using LPG. The most popular hot-water supply system was an oil boiler and the next was an electricity boiler. The amount of energy use in a rural household generally showed 20,000 to 40,000 won/month of the electric power rate, 400 to 800 liter/year of the oil and 60 to 120 kg/year of the LPG. Prompt measures should be taken to promote the spread of new and renewable energy such as solar heat, biomass and wind power, etc.

Cooling Efficiency of Low Pressure Compressed Air Fogging System in Naturally Ventilated Greenhouses

Sang-Woon Nam; Young-Shik Kim; In-Mo Sung; Gi-Hyuk Ko

In order to derive the efficient utilization of low pressure compressed air fogging system, cooling efficiencies with control types were analyzed through cooling experiments in tomato greenhouses. The control types were set up with temperature control, humidity control, temperature and humidity control, and time control. It showed that the cooling effects were 0.7 to on average and maximum of 4.3 to , the humidification effects were 3.5 to 13.5 % on average and maximum of 14.3 to 24.4 %. Both the cooling and humidification effect were the highest in the time control method. The cooling efficiency of the air fogging system was not high with 8.3 to 27.3 % on average. However, the cooling efficiency of 24.6 to 27.3 % which appears from the time control is similar to the cooling efficiency of high pressure fogging system experimented in Japan. The air fogging system is operated by low pressure, but its efficiency is similar to high pressure. We think because it uses compressed air. From this point of view, we suggest that the air fogging system can get the cooling efficiency of similar levels to that of high pressure fogging system and it will have an advantage from clogging problem of nozzle etc.

Estimating Optimal Probability Distributions of Daily Potential Photovoltaic Power Generation for Development of Rural Green-Village by Solar Energy - with Area of Seosan Weather Station -

Dae-Sik Kim; Seung-Mo Koo; Sang-Woon Nam

Photovoltaic power generation is currently being recognized as one of the most popular sources for renewable resources over the country. Although it is also being adapted to rural area for may reasons, it is important to estimate the magnitudes of power outputs with reliable statistical methodologies, while applying historical daily solar energy data, for correct feasibility analysis. In this study, one of the well-known statistical methodologies is employed to define the appropriate probability distributions for monthly power outputs for the selected rural area, county of Seo-san, province of Chungnam. The results imply that the assumption of normal distributions for several months may lead to incorrect decision-making and therefore lead to the unreliable feasibility analysis. Generalized beta and triangular distributions were found to be superior to normal distribution, when describing monthly probability distributions for daily photovoltaic power. Based on the appropriate distributions resulted from this study, Monte Carlo simulation technique was also applied to provide additional flexible information for the relevant decision makers. This study found out new finding that the probability distributions should be considered to make planning of the photovoltaic power system in rural village unit, in order to give reasonable economic analysis to the decision makers.

Investigations on Inundation Damage in Greenhouse Complex Established at Lowlands on the Geumgang Riverside

Sang-Woon Nam; Tae-Cheol Kim; Dae-Sik Kim

Investigations on the inundation damage and improvement measures were carried out centering around the protected horticultural complex concentrated in lowlands on the side of Geum river, in Nonsan and Buyeo, Chungnam. Most greenhouses were single-span plastic houses in this area, and tomato, strawberry and watermelon were cultivated mainly. 45.8 % of whole farmhouse were experienced in damage by inundation, and a frequency of the damage was average once in 11 years. The most urgent problem at the greenhouse culture in this area was showed in order of drainage improvement, irrigation water resources and energy saving. Consideration items in drainage improvement project for protected horticulture were showed in order of extending drain pumps, extending drain canals, using concrete flume in drain ditch. It needs to consider systematic plans that can restrain new establishment of greenhouses on the lowland paddy field in drainage area. It is difficult to remove greenhouses which are already established or prohibit cultivation. Therefore we should impose minimum duty items so that greenhouse tillers can cope with inundation. And it is thought that managing agency need to minimize farmers damage by improving drainage ability and introducing maintenance pattern that is different from rice cropping.

Dae-Sik Kim; Sang-Woon Nam; Tai-Cheol Kim

This study aims to simulate the 3 dimensional (3D) model of Keum-man connection canal using geographic information system (GIS) as well as considering design in viewpoint of engineering. The canal connects from Keumkang to Mangyungkang in order to supply fresh water into Saemankeum lake. This study used 3 dimensional spatial planning model (3DSPLAM) process to generate the 3D model, which has not only several planning layers in actual process, but also their corresponding layers in modeling process to simulate 3D space of rural villages. The discharge of the canal is on slope of 1/28,400 in the canal length of 14.2km, which consists of pipe line and open channel. This study surveyed the route of the canal and its surrounding environment for facilities to make images in the 3D graphic model. Besides, the present study developed data set in GIS for geogrphical surface modeling as well as parameters in hydraulic analysis for water surface profile on the canal using HEC-RAS model. From the data set constructed, this study performed analysis of water surface profile with HEC-RAS, generation of digital elevation model (DEM) and 3D objects, design of the canal section and route on DEM in AutoCAD, and 3D canal model and its surrounding 3D space in 3DMAX with virtual reality. The study result showed that the process making 3D canal model tried in this study is very useful to generate computer graphic model with the designed canal on the surface of DEM. The generated 3D canal can be used to assist decision support for the canal policy.

Dae-Sik Kim; Seung-Mo Koo; Sang-Woon Nam

This study aims to estimate the optimal probability distribution of daily electricity generation by wind power, in order to contribute in rural green-village planning. Wind power generation is now being recognized as one of the most popular sources for renewable resources over the country. Although it is also being adapted to rural area for may reasons, it is important to estimate the magnitudes of power outputs with reliable statistical methodologies while applying historical daily wind data, for correct feasibility analysis. In this study, one of the well-known statistical methodology is employed to define the appropriate statistical distributions for monthly power outputs for specific rural areas. The results imply that the assumption of normal distributions for many cases may lead to incorrect decision-making and therefore lead to the unreliable feasibility analysis. Subjective methodology for testing goodness of fit for normal distributions on all the cases in this study, provides possibilities to consider the other various types of statistical distributions for more precise feasibility analysis.
