The Edinburgh Handedness Inventory was administered to 1224 high school students (605 males and 619 females). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to re-examine its psychometric properties. The results showed that this instrument has poor measurement properties. Removal of a few problematic items improved internal consistency of the questionnaire and improved its validity. The results also suggest that the impact of modification did not affect classification of individuals into left- and right-handedness categories but did influence classification of mixed-handers with the original version classifying significantly more individuals into mixed-handedness category than the modified version.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between laterality and spine deformities in early adolescence, with special reference to sex differences. Interviews, anthropometric measurements and clinical examinations of body posture were carried out on a sample of 2546 schoolchildren, aged from 11 to 14 years, in seven elementary schools in the centre of Belgrade. Possible confounding factors (age, sex, body weight and body height) were controlled for. The overall prevalence of spine deformities (scoliosis and/or thoracic hyperkyphosis) in the investigated population was 11.8%, out of which there were 7.8% adolescents with scoliosis, 4.0% with thoracic hyperkyphosis, and 0.3% with both spine deformities. The prevalence of scoliosis was 2.7 times higher in girls compared to boys (11.7% vs. 4.3%) while the prevalence of thoracic hyperkyphosis was 1,6 higher among boys (5.0% vs. 3.2%). We found 7.6% of the schoolchildren examined to be left-handed. Left handedness was significantly related to scoliosis in girls (crude OR=1.60 and 95% confidence interval=1.01–2.54). Multivariate analysis showed that significant independent factors for scoliosis were female sex (p < 0.001), age (p=0.01) and left handedness (p=0.02). We did not find any appreciable relation between left handedness and thoracic hyperkyphosis in both sexes.

BackgroundAlthough behavioural dominance of the right hand in humans is likely to be under genetic control, departures from this population norm, i.e. left- or non-right-handedness, are believed to be influenced by environmental factors. Among many such environmental factors including, for example, low birth weight, testosterone level, and maternal age at birth, season of birth has occasionally been investigated. The overall empirical evidence for the season of birth effect is mixed.MethodsWe have investigated the effect of season of birth in an epidemiologically robust sample of randomly selected young people (n = 977), all born in the same year. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov type statistical test was used to determine season of birth.ResultsNeither the right-handed nor the non-right-handed groups demonstrated birth asymmetry relative to the normal population birth distribution. There was no between-group difference in the seasonal distribution of birth when comparing the right-handed to the non-right-handed groups.ConclusionThe present study failed to provide support for a season of birth effect on atypical lateralisation of handedness in humans.

It is well established that the multilayered structure of the vocal fold is highly adjusted to the requirements of the vibration process during phonation. There is also some partial data indicating that the spatial arrangement of each vocal fold layer corresponds to the functional requirements, and thus facilitate the phonation process. Nevertheless, all reports on the spatial arrangement of the vocal fold structures deal only with an individual element of the vocal fold histologic structure. The present study encompasses the spatial histologic analysis of all major elements of the vocal fold layers. It was demonstrated that the vocal fold epithelial cells, the connective and muscle fibers, and even the blood vessels run parallel to the vocal fold free edge, which indicates a high adjustment to the phonation requirements and the vibration process.

Nodular fasciitis (NF), also called proliferative or infiltrative fasciitis is considered to be a benign reactive process of the soft tissues (subcutaneous tissue, muscle or fascia) rather than a true neoplasm. Although the extremities are the most common sites, it may arise anywhere in the body. Local excision presents the main treatment. This study presents a case of NF with a unique clinical presentation, an acute subcutaneous temporal hemorrhagic growth. Because temporal NF is more often dermally situated than NF involving other anatomic sites, it may present with superficial ulceration or bleeding and appear clinically unusual. Nodular fasciitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of other benign or malignant tissue masses involving the temporal area.

A significant role of high-risk Human papilloma viruses (HR HPV) in the development of cervical carcinoma is well known. HR HPV 16 and 18 account for approximately 70% of all cases of cervical cancer worldwide. The incidence of cervical cancer in Serbia, is one of the highest in Europe. The aim of our study was to investigate the distribution of HR HPV types in cervical carcinoma of Serbian women, as well as association between the HPV types and pathohistological findings. The study included 80 archival cervical cancer tissues from the same number of patients. The presence of HPV DNA was determined using MY09/MY11 primers for L1 gene and GP1/GP2 primers for E1 gene. HPV was detected in 78.75% tissues. HR HPV genotypes found in the decreasing order of frequency were: HPV16 (80.39%), HPV33 (7.84%), HPV58 (5.88%), HPV18 (1.96%), HPV45 (1.96%) and HPV53 (1.96%). The examined tissues were 91.25% squamous cell carcinomas and 8.75% adenocarcinoma. The high frequency of HPV 16 was observed in both types of carcinoma (80.8% and 75%, respectively) while the prevalence of HPV18 was low. These results may contribute to the implementation of cervical carcinoma prevention program in Serbia, including the selection of the most appropriate vaccine and immunization program.

INTRODUCTION Lateralization of brain functions such as language and manual dominance (hand preferences and fine motor control) are most likely under genetic control. However, this does not preclude the effect of various environmental factors on functional brain lateralization. A strong association of non-right-handedness (left- and mixed-handedness) with various neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g. schizophrenia, autism, Rett syndrome) implies that in some cases, non-right-handedness may be acquired rather than inherited (i.e., pathologically determined). OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was: (a) re-investigation of several known risk factors for left-handedness (age of mother and/or father, twin pregnancies, and birth order), and (b) examination of hitherto uninvestigated factors (type of birth, Apgar score, maternal smoking during pregnancy). METHODS Putative, causative environmental agents for this shift in manual distributions are explored in a sample of 1031 high school students (404 males and 627 females) from Belgrade. Both pre-existing (age of parents, twin pregnancy, and birth order) and new (Apgar score, maternal smoking, type of birth) putative agents are examined. RESULTS We found that maternal smoking and low Apgar score (2-6) can significantly increase risk for left-handedness (p=0.046 and p=0.042, respectively).The remaining factors showed no significant association with left-handedness in adolescents. CONCLUSION Our study clearly demonstrates that left-handedness may be related to maternal smoking during pregnancy and a low Apgar score on birth.

During laryngomicroscopy, the superficial layers of vocal fold epithelium can be examined in vivo and in situ by contact endoscopy. Methylene blue is applied initially to stain the epihelial cells of the vocal folds. When in contact with mucosal tissue, this endoscope provides 60 and 150 times magnification and clear visualization of cellular patterns of the superficial epithelial layers. For the first time in our laryngological clinical practice, we confirmed a number of previosly established parametars such as regularity and arrangement of the epithelium, nucleus contour, and nucleus-cytoplasm ratio, what all enable recognition and easy evaluation of different clinical conditions such as chronic laryngitis, Reinkes edema, papiloma dysplasia or vocal fold carcinoma. The advantage of contact endoscopy in vivo and in situ allows for detailed scan and mapping of all cell changes of the whole mucosa surface. All these features definitely classify the contact endoscopy into additional diagnostic methods in laryngology.

To date, lateralization in living beings is a phenomenon almost mythologically unexplored. Scientists have proved that lateralization is not exclusively a human feature. Investigations in molecular biology, protein structure, mobility of bacteria, and intracellular lateralization in ciliates, shows important and universal nature of lateralization in living systems. Dominant lateralization implies the appearance of a dominant extremity, or a dominant sense during the performance of complex psychomotor activities. Hand dominance is usually defined as a tendency to use one hand rather than another to perform most activities and this is considered to be the most obvious example of cerebral lateralization and exclusive characteristic of humans. However, there are some exceptions in other species. The dominant hand is able to perform more complex and subtle manual tasks than the non-dominant hand, and this behavioral superiority is the absolute result of additional cerebral support. The asymmetry of brain organization was confirmed in rats, chimpanzees, dogs and birds, some fishes and lizards. The relationships between hand dominance with brain structure and function remain far from clear. For a long time, lateralization was considered unique to humans, but recently it has become clear that lateralization is a fundamental characteristic of the organization of brain and behavior in all vertebrates. It has been questioned to what extent lateralization in humans and other vertebrates may be comparable.

The gastric cancer is, after colon cancer, the most common cancer of the gastrointestinal tract. Diagnosis of gastric cancer is usually based on the use of contrasting radiography, fiber-optic endoscopy with biopsy and histologic specimen examination. Proper diagnosis is very important for accurate preoperative tumor grading and selection of surgical intervention. The proper determination of the degree of advanced malignancy is of great importance for the proper treatment of patients with gastric cancer. Western surgeons use TNM system of classification tumors is given by the American Committee on Cancer (AJ CC), while the eastern surgeons and Japanese use the Japanese classification system which was inaugurated in 1981. Operational resolution of gastric cancer is certainly the main therapeutic procedure in the treatment of this disease. Prior to any operational work, for the successful resolution of operational cancerous lesions require adequate preoperative preparation of patients. In this way we reduce the number of postoperative complications.
