The use of MOOCs in social enterprise education: an evaluation of a North–South collaborative FutureLearn program

Sara Calvo; Andres Morales; Jeremy Wade

This study contributes to the literature on technology and entrepreneurship education, and in particularly to the discussion on massive open online courses (MOOCs) in social enterprise education. Using the Freeth/Kirkpatricks evaluation model, this paper examines the effectiveness of a social enterprise MOOC program – The FutureLearn (FL) Social Enterprise Program – created in a collaboration between Middlesex University, Living in Minca Ltd in London and the Jindal Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship at O.P. Jindal Global University in Delhi, India. To date, there is no evidence of previous work evaluating the effectiveness of a MOOC in social enterprise education, particularly one designed in collaboration between institutions from the global North and South countries. Our findings revealed that the FutureLearn Social Enterprise Program was perceived as positive, and we identified evidence of changes in behavior, as well as, benefits and opportunities for both individuals and organizations. The results provide insights into alternative forms of collaboration for the creation and implementation of enterprise education courses, and specifically for collaborations in the design of social enterprise MOOC programs done between global North and South countries.

Arusha women entrepreneur: reducing poverty through job creation and sustainable income for smallholder farmers

Sara Calvo; Andres Morales

Subject area Social enterprise. Study level/applicability This case study can be used on modules on social enterprise (SE) and international business for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Case overview Arusha Women Entrepreneur (AWE) is a SE established in 2008 in Tanzania that employs low-income women from peri-urban Arusha and provides technical and management skills training to smallholder farmers. AWE has created a value supply chain from the production and marketing of aflatoxin-free, natural peanut butter, having a strong vision of delivering social and development benefits for smallholder peanut farmers and unemployed women. Expected learning outcomes This case is the basis for class discussion rather than for illustrating either effective or ineffective handling of a business. From this case, students will learn about the emergence and development of SEs and the challenges they encounter to grow. Supplementary materials Teaching Notes are available for educators only. London 2012: Missed out on Olympics contracts? A case study of ethnic minority organisations in East London

Sara Calvo

Although London’s golden summer of sport is now over, the question arises, what has been the legacy of the 2012 Games for ethnic minority organisations? The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games were seen as an opportunity; a potential catalyst for the regeneration of East London, creating valuable jobs and business opportunities for the local community. One of the proposed benefits of the 2012 Games was the chance for local ethnic minority groups to participate in the preparation and delivery of the Games; however, little is known about the extent to which such groups were involved. This paper addresses the knowledge gap in the literature through the analysis of secondary sources. The sources shed light on the availability of Games-related contract opportunities to ethnic minority businesses and social enterprises. This is followed by an in-depth analysis of the ethnic minority third sector based upon a telephone survey and semi-structured interviews with leaders of ethnic minority social enterprises. Findings show that very few ethnic minority organisations in the East London Olympic boroughs won 2012 Games contracts; furthermore, the paper identifies a number of important issues relating to their participation in the Games.
