Supervision and Litigation

Sarah Davies; Andrew Symon

Andrew Symons article on supervision and litigation (Vol. 5(2) 1997, p.70) made interesting reading. The article discussed, among others, the case of a junior midwife (qualified for less than 6 months) who failed to ensure that medical help was obtained in order to effect a forceps delivery for a woman in her care. The fetal heart rate had been 100-115 for about an hour before help arrived. Although Symons main point is to emphasize the support that must be given to less experienced staff from their senior colleagues, and also the importance of accurate record keeping, I think that his article throws up some other important issues that need to be discussed further.
