To examine the development of a viable framework for the enhancement of construction site management practices through an integration of knowledge management (KM) processes ‐ underpinned by case study findings from construction organizations that have implemented knowledge management. A multiple case study approach (that incorporates qualitative comparators with observations made within five construction sites) was adopted. The main aims were to investigate the key problems of site management practices, to observe existing practice in managing knowledge on the construction site, and to present opportunities for improvement. The case study findings revealed that services obstruction, poor site communication and information, incomplete design, local residents, and cooperation and motivation issues are major problems inhibiting construction site performance. They also identified that the site management team used conventional approaches (meeting and observation) to resolve management and technical problems onthe construction site. The site management teams should be prepared to deal with on‐site problems and risks in a systematic and efficient way.KM can help to prevent the site management team from repeating past errors; by capturing best practices, lessons learned, and especially, the solutions to problems that arise on site, similar situations in the future can be dealt with efficiently and effectively. There is little written on how to improve site management practices through knowledge management. This paper focuses on a KM deployment at site management level and demonstrates that site management teams still do not have any systematic methods for the creation, capture, storage, sharing and reuse of knowledge.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the need to develop building service standard method of measurement (BSSMM) that would provide a home ground advantage and a framework for managing the cost of building services by quantity surveyors. Design/methodology/approach – A review of previous research on the rules of measurement was carried out. This exercise provides the basis for questionnaire design which was administered to quantity surveyors in Malaysia construction industry. Findings – The results indicated the need to develop BSSMM. In total, 23 variables were identified as essential features of such standard method of measurement. These variables were grouped into three categories and a priority ranking of them was carried out. The analysis revealed a strong agreement among quantity surveyors on the priority ranking of the essential features of the BSSMM. Research limitations/implications – Although, the research would assist industry stakeholders in developing BSSMM that reflects local an...

Natural disasters such as flood which are related to weather, occurring in a lot of places in the world. Environment deterioration and human life damage are the recorded results of floods. Between years 2006 till 2008 due to heavy monsoon rainfalls, a number of floods have generated along Malaysias in different parts of the country. The critical zones in term of flood damage are located in the east coast of peninsular Malaysia in the states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. Manek Urai, as a rural area due to its type of buildings was one of the most vulnerable areas during Kelantan flood in 2014. As a proven fact, the victims need to be informed about housing options at the first one week after disaster. The evaluation of building damage must be conducted quickly and exactly. It is a clear fact that building damage survey using proper damage chart is more effective. This paper presents the results of site investigation according to the damage chart for damage assessment, and classifies photographic data of Manek Urai area, based on the damage chart. In addition, the damage chart of timber structures affected by liquefaction is localized.

Abstract. This study reviews the importance of green building and identified some popular rating tools available. The importance of green building requirements was also discussed. Significant cost factors in green buildings were described and methods of capturing and controlling the costs of building services by quantity surveyors discussed. The major barrier to effective cost control of green building have been identified as lack of a clear green design goal; midstream attempts to incorporate green; decentralized management of the green building process; lack of experience with green building; and insufficient time and funding. The study concluded that, it is essential for quantity surveyors to develop a cost management framework responsive to both client values and user requirements within the framework of sustainable development.
