Abstract The process of separating ethanol from aqueous solutions using supercritical carbon dioxide is in the development stage and was investigated experimentally using a bench scale test plant. It was operated under conditions based on previous data (Furuta et al. 1990). The results showed that more than 99 mol% of ethanol could be concentrated without any entrainer. A reflux ratio grater than 2 was required for good extraction efficiency. For recycling use, carbon dioxide was easily separated from ethanol using a high pressure distillation column.

Separation of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid from Vegetable Oil by Supercritical Fluid Extraction and Chromatography

ABSTRACT A new separation method based on supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and chromatography (SFC) is being developed for separation and enrichment of triglycerides, which consist of polyunsaturated fatty acids from vegetable oil. Supercritical carbon dioxide is used as a solvent for extraction and/or the mobile phase for chromatography. The solubility of perilla oil is measured at 313K and at pressures from 20 to 40MPa. The effects of the pressure and linear velocity are discussed for the height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP) and the loading capacity for supercritical fluid chromatography.
