Expectations of the information and telecommunication revolution are pervasive. In business domain, the Internet and the other telecommunication services are anticipated to drive the market to open for creating tremendous business opportunities as well as to permit managers to make real-time decisions for extending their business chances. In social domain, the revolution is expected to reduce environmental loads and consumption of natural resources. It is also expected to leverage mutual understanding among individuals over the world, forming communities and fostering knowledge and cultures.

Individual service systems will be combined and collaborated over the network into one-stop service systems within a very short time. According to this vision, Japanese and European parties are developing service integration platform prototypes collaboratively based on autonomous decentralized service system (ADSS) technologies. The platform can be applied to various types of service systems. We introduce an example system for e-government applications developed on the platform.

An operating system for an online transaction processing system with a heavy load

Satoshi Hakomori; Hideo Taniguchi

In this paper, we describe an operating system for terminal controller which controls communication lines and terminals in a large-scaled distributed transaction processing system. Since the controller deals with a lot of transaction requests from terminals concurrently, its operating system needs to mange resources efficiently in order to guarantee the maximum response time. Besides, system availability and efficiency for system maintenance are also required, therefore the operating system has to provide essential facilities. Our operating system has been developed to satisfy such requirements in a practical way. This paper introduces the major features, evaluation results, and states of the application.

Information-providing Mechanism Combining Broadcast and On-demand Modes in Mobile Computing Environments

Masanori Tanabe; Satoshi Hakomori; Ushio Inoue

People with portable computers are to be able to retrieve a variety of information at any time and at any location by using wireless systems. Since the bandwidth of wireless communication systems is narrower than that of wired communication systems, however, it is difficult for servers to use wireless systems to send much information to many clients. This paper proposes an information-providing mechanism combining broadcast and on-demand modes of data delivery. The broadcast mode enables a server to support many clients via narrow bandwidth and the on-demand modes enables each client to access different data. An algorithm deciding which data should be broadcasted is presented. It minimizes expected length of waiting time of clients to get needed data from the server. Evaluation results show the effectiveness of this algorithm.
