ABSTRACT:Based on the underlying Resource-Based View (RBV) perspective, the main objective of this study is to empirically examine the relationship of logistics capability and logistics performance, and the moderating effect of firm size on this relationship. This study adopted a cross-sectional design and collected quantitative data from a total of 81 logistic service providers (LSP) registered with the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) Directory of Malaysian Industries 2013, from three states (i.e., Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang) in Peninsular Malaysia. This study used the Pearson correlation and the moderated multiple regression (MMR) to test if the logistics capability has a significant positive effect on firm performance and the moderating effect of firm size on the relationship between logistics capability and firm performance. Findings of this study revealed that logistics capability has a significant positive relationship with logistics performance. Logistics service capabilities and flexible capabilities delivered by firms are vital for liner shipping services. Moreover, this relationship is significantly affected by firm size, which suggests that, in comparison, the inclusion of firm size (large vs. medium/small LSPs) in the logistics capability – logistics performance relationship has a significant moderating effect in changing the degree (volume) of performance. The moderating effect of firm size is shown to be capable of changing the nature of relationship and explains the conditions in which capability causes LSPs to perform better. The presence of a significant moderating effect of firm size (large and medium/small LSP firms) exceeded the linear relationship between logistics capability and logistics performance. The study has bridged the literature gaps in such a way that it offers empirical evidence on the moderating effect of firm size on the relationship between logistics capability and logistics performance using a Malaysian sample. In order to foster the economic development through effective logistics services, the logistics services development policies and programs should therefore focus on providing a supportive platform for logistics service providers to improve their capacities, which would ultimately lead to better performance and the sustainability of the logistics service providers in Malaysia.

The inter-firm technology transfers (TT) through international joint ventures (IJVs), among others, have significantly contributed to a higher degree of local innovation performance/capabilities, technological capabilities, competitive advantage, organizational learning effectiveness, productivity, technological development of local industry, and the economic growth of the host country. Since the focus of inter-firm TT in developing countries has shifted to degree of technology transfer, organizations in developing countries are attempting to assess not only the significant role of technology transfer in strengthening their corporate and human resource performance but also the influence of other critical variables such as MNCs’ size, age of JVs (JVAGE), country of origin, and MNC’s type of industries that could significantly moderate the relationship. The main objective of this paper is to empirically examine the moderating effect of age of JV (old vs. young JVs) on the relationships between degree of inter-firm technology transfer and two dimensions of local firms’ performance: corporate and human resource performances. Using the moderated multiple regression (MMR) analysis, the theoretical models and hypotheses in this study were tested based on empirical data gathered from 128 joint venture companies registered with the Registrar of Companies of Malaysia (ROC). The results revealed that age of JV has significantly affected the relationships between degrees of technology transfer and both dimensions of local firms’ performance; where the relationships were found stronger for old JVs as compared to young JVs. The study has bridged the literature gaps in such that it offers empirical evidence and new insights on the significant moderating effects of age of JVs in the relationships between degree of inter-firm technology transfer and local firms’ performance using the Malaysian sample.

Purpose n n n n nUnder the premise of resource-based view (RBV), this study aims to examine the influence of host-country characteristics (i.e. market environment, cultural factors, government policies and absorptive capacity) on improved knowledge acquired by means of intra-firm technology transfer and the latter’s subsequent effect on corporate sustainability among subsidiaries of foreign multinational corporations (MNCs) in Malaysia. n n n n nDesign/methodology/approach n n n n nThe following study adopted a cross-sectional design. Quantitative data were collected through structured interview from the representatives of selected 252 subsidiaries of foreign-based MNCs located in Peninsular Malaysia. n n n n nFindings n n n n nThe findings of this study revealed that market environment, government policies and absorptive capacity significantly affect the adoption of innovative knowledge, which also has a significant positive effect on corporate sustainability. The findings also revealed a partial mediation of improved knowledge between market environment, government policies and absorptive capacity on corporate sustainability. n n n n nResearch limitations/implications n n n n nThis study recommends that the host country should formulate and adopt trade and FDI friendly policies, as well as stricter intellectual property laws, and, at the same time, provide higher education and training to its citizens to maximize foreign investment and knowledge transfer. n n n n nOriginality/value n n n n nApart from highlighting the under-researched issue of organizational sustainability, this study is unique in its approach of connecting the external environment of the host country with the internal knowledge of the firm and corporate sustainability in a single framework. The empirical findings of this study support the hypothesized relationships and thereby extend the scope of the contingency theory and RBV in addition to simultaneously enriching the existing intra-firm knowledge management literature, particularly in the Malaysian context.
