Phytosynthetic carbon fixation (PCF) is the major mechanism for the conversion of inorganic carbon to organic carbon in the world’s oceans. Phytoplankton perform PCF by using light energy for reductive carboxylation which results in the primary formation of biological material (primary production) in euphotic marine ecosystems.
