Abstract The aim of the present study was to identify the game-related statistics that discriminate between season-long successful and unsuccessful basketball teams participating in the Spanish Basketball League (LEB1). The sample included all 145 average records per season from the 870 games played between the 2000–2001 and the 2005–2006 regular seasons. The following game-related statistics were gathered from the official box scores of the Spanish Basketball Federation: 2- and 3-point field-goal attempts (both successful and unsuccessful), free-throws (both successful and unsuccessful), defensive and offensive rebounds, assists, steals, turnovers, blocks (both made and received), and fouls (both committed and received). To control for season variability, all results were normalized to minutes played each season and then converted to z-scores. The results allowed discrimination between best and worst teams’ performances through the following game-related statistics: assists (SC=0.47), steals (SC=0.34), and blocks (SC=0.30). The function obtained correctly classified 82.4% of the cases. In conclusion, season-long performance may be supported by players’ and teams’ passing skills and defensive preparation.

Jaime Sampaio; Sergio José Ibañez Godoy; Sebastián Feu

The purpose of this study was to identify the basketball game-related statistics that best discriminate performances by sex of players and level of competition. Archival data were obtained from the International Basketball Federation boxscores for all games during mens senior (n = 62), mens junior (n = 64), womens senior (n = 62), and womens junior (n = 42) World Championships. The game-related statistics gathered included 2- and 3-point field-goals (both successful and unsuccessful), free-throws (both successful and unsuccessful), defensive and offensive rebounds, blocks, assists, fouls, steals and turnovers. For the analysis only the close games were selected (N = 105, 1 to 12 points difference). Mens teams were discriminated from womens teams by their higher percentage of blocks and lower percentage of steals and unsuccessful 2-point field goals. Junior teams were discriminated from senior teams by their lower percentage of assists and higher percentage of turnovers. In the two-factor interaction, the teams were mainly discriminated by the game-related statistics identified for level of competition.

BACKGROUND An active lifestyle and a good weight status are two major health determinants from a public health perspective. AIM To evaluate the degree of association between physical activity, weight status and the emotional and mental health of Spanish schoolchildren. METHOD Mental health status was assessed through the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), also leisure time physical activity and body mass index (BMI) in a total of 6 803 children from 4 to 15 years participating in the Spanish National Health Survey 2006. The degree of association between. these variables was estimated by a multinomial logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Among sedentary schoolchildren are more common mental health problems (OR 2.10), emotional problems (OR 1.84), conduct problems (OR 1.53), problems with peers (OR 2.35) and social relationship difficulties (OR 1.36). Obesity is associated with poor general mental health (OR 1.58), and obese schoolchildren show more often emotional problems (OR 1.52) and problems with peers (OR 2.43). CONCLUSIONS In the Spanish schoolchildren, a healthy BMI is associated with increased mental well-being, although an active lifestyle is the best indicator of a good mental health status.

Software for planning sport training: Basketball application

Miguel A. Pérez; Mercedes Macías; Sergio José Ibáñez; Sebastián Feu

It is necessary to establish, define, and specify initially, before the development of a season, the greatest number of variables affecting the development of the training process. This generic definition will serve as a framework for subsequent concretion and development in the different phases of training. The computing application that we here present allows the planning of the training process (the season, macrocycles, mesocycles, microcycles and sessions). This computer application, PYC-Basket, aims to be an instrument to facilitate the work of planning and controlling training sessions for basketball coaches, making this process more rigorous and objective. The computer system presented helps the planning process of the training of basketball teams. It is exhaustive, precise, and objective, and ranges from the general data of a season to those of a training session. Moreover, initial planning information will be compared with real information that will be collected in the different training sessions. This allows control of the training process, so that the deviations occurring in it can be studied. This instrument permits making better use of the time used for planning and controlling the training session, since this will be done automatically on introducing the real data of each work session. The work of the coach must be orientated towards the interpretation of this data and any appropriate adjustments.

IMPORTANCIA DE LAS EXPERIENCIAS PREVIAS EN LA VOCACIÓN Y ELECCIÓN DE LA TITULACIÓN DE PROFESOR CON MENCIÓN EN EDUCACIÓN FÍSICA

Sebastián Feu; Manuel Vizuete; Ernesto De la Cruz-Sánchez; Amalia Gragera-Alonso

The aim of this study is to determine how sports practice during school years and presently affects teachers’ beliefs and perceptions about Physical Education. The descriptive and survey-based inferential study included 234 Primary Education student teachers (67.5% women and 32.5% men). Physical Education students are characterized by having higher previous resources to design warming-up routines, a physical conditioning program of sports and physical activities. Students who perceive themselves as more capable of participating and organizing dance-related activities chose other areas, and women felt more capable to conduct that task. Sport experience and beliefs acquired during school years for physical activity, gender and personal experience in spare-time physical activities impact one’s call to be a Physical Education teacher.
