Using Raman spectroscopy, we demonstrate that low levels of β-carotene, lycopene, and xanthophyll give rise to resonance enhanced bands in blood plasma. These results explain the significance of previously unidentified spectral maxima which have been related to the state of health of the blood donor.

Abstract Contrary to accepted generalizations, allyl Grignard reagent gives about 15 per cent of the β -side addition product with dehydroisoandrosterone. This finding is discussed in light of recent examples of β -side attack when proximate substituents (12 α and 16 α ) influence stereochemistry. Selective functionalization of the allyl side chain via hydroboration is described.
