Abstract Ferroelectric liquid crystals having a fluorine atom at an asymmetric carbon were synthesized by means of a new method without hydrofluoric acid. An amino acid, L-isoleucine, is converted to (R,S)-α-fluorinated chiral carboxylic acid. Biphenyl and triphenyl type liquid crystals are easily synthesized using this fluorinated carboxylic acid, which show a large spontaneous polarization of 200 nC/cm2 for the biphenyl type and 300 nC/cm2 for the triphenyl type. The electro-optic properties of the mixtures consisting of the chiral compound and various non-chiral smectic C (SmC) compounds are also described.

The authors present a novel type of analog gray-scale display device based on a surface-stabilized ferroelectric LCD (liquid crystal display) using an SmC* phase with long pitch of ferroelectric liquid crystals, where the direction of liquid crystal molecules shows monostability along the rubbing direction for uniaxial orientation of the substrate. Analog gray-scale display induced by the modulation of an applied electric field with a high speed response is thus confirmed. Optimization of a surface-stabilized monostable ferroelectric liquid crystal display (SSMFLCD) is obtained by controlling the chiral concentration and applying a voltage treatment with rectangular wave of 700 Hz and 20 to 50 V during the cooling process from the N* to the SmC* phase. In this way the contrast ratio (>80) and the linearity (the analog gray-scale in the low driving field >

We developed 3-panel transmissive LCD rear-projection TVs for home use Commercial name: GRAND WEGA with large 42/50/60″ screens which display excellent pictures of high resolution and quality befitting the digital TV era: with high resolution and contrast and excellence of tonal and color reproduction. This paper focuses on a high temperature poly-Si TFT-LCD panel technology with 1.05 million pixels 1366 × 768 and a new driving method, the dot-line inversion method.
