9.3: 32″ WXGA LCD TV using OCB Mode, Low Temperature p‐Si TFT and Blinking Backlight Technology

To improve the moving picture quality of TFT LCD-TVs, a lot of investigations about pseudo-impulse driving to LCD have been reported, the method of which decreased contrast ratio. In this paper, we have investigated 32 inch-in-diagonal HDTV (1366 × 768 pixel) panels using OCB mode, pseudo-impulse driving, and backlight blinking. High performance of MPRT (8.4 ms), contrast ratio (600:1), brightness (600 cd/m2) and wide viewing angle (>160) have been obtained. It became clear that the only combination of OCB mode using pseudo-impulse driving and blinking backlight can provide the higher performance required specification of TV application.

We have developed high quality 3D display system with time-sequential OCB LCD. That is 3D display of 15.4 inch WXGA panel without the problem of 3D crosstalk, pseudoscopy and 3D moire. Fast response OCB LCDs were used for both the panel and active shutter glasses and improved blinking backlight control technology was applied.

11.4: OCB‐LCDs with New Driving Method Having Fast Response of 2.3‐ms MPRT and High Contrast Ratio of 1000:1

We have developed high performance OCB-III TFT-LCDs using LED blinking Backlight. The MPRT of 2.3 ms, which is the fastest in the world, and high contrast of 1000:1 are achieved with 12.1 inch SVGA OCB-III panel. Even at low temperature of −20C. the MPRT of OCB-III is 13.2 ms which is 1/4 of conventional LCDs. The OCB-III can be superior to the CRT in quality of motion picture.

We have developed a high performance OCB-III LCDs with dynamic backlight control technology having a high contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and a MPRT of 2.0ms with the 32 inch panel. with OCB-III driving, which is suitable for dynamic backlight control, we have realized a high contrast ratio without sacrificing its fast response time.
