Despite the innovative trends in marine technology and the implementation of safety-related regulations, shipping accidents are still a leading concern for global maritime interests. Ensuring the consistency of shipping accident investigation reports is recognized as a significant goal in order to clearly identify the root causes of these accidents. Hence, the goal of this paper is to generate an analytical Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS), based on a Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP), in order to identify the role of human errors in shipping accidents. Integration of FAHP improves the HFACS framework by providing an analytical foundation and group decision-making ability in order to ensure quantitative assessment of shipping accidents.

Axiomatic design (AD) provides a framework to describe design objects and a set of axioms to evaluate relations between intended functions and means by which they are achieved. Fuzziness in axiomatic design (FAD) has been handled by some researchers to evaluate alternatives under fuzzy environment. In this paper, three important tolls are added FAD method so as to supply its deficiency. The first one is the hierarchy which has the ability of taking the hierarchical structures into account. The second is the crisp toll which has the ability of taking the positive information into consideration under fuzzy environment. The last one is the ranking ability. As a matter of fact, FAD method is developed to be used for the solution of all manners of multi-attribute decision making problems. Moreover, an application to a teaching assistant selection problem is made to show the usability of the developed method.

Although there have been quite a number of theoretical and practical studies where axiomatic design (AD) principles have been used in the last few years, there is a lack of a comprehensive literature survey which evaluates and classifies these papers. This study provides a recognizable overview of literature on AD principles from the past 20 years and introduces a novel classification scheme covering 63 papers. Each article was classified into four main groups, namely the type of the axiom, the application area, the method, and the evaluation type. Findings of our paper indicate that most of the studies in the literature are application-based papers which use typically the independence axiom. While product design is put forward in the application area, the crisp approach is widely used as an evaluation type. A rise in the fuzzy evaluation based research studies using the information axiom for multi-attribute decision making problems has also been noticed.

The closest relationships between ship management companies and shipyards begin with the initial design process of new ships and they continue during the life cycle of operating ships. Periodic docking facilities which can be recognized as the biggest logistical issue in the content of ship maintenance program are the critical processes from the viewpoint of ship owners. Hence, this process should be well-planned and organized to satisfy the various expectations such as quality of service, capacity limitations, and geographical advantages, by taking cost and time constraints into account. Hence, the selection problem with respect to several criteria to find the most suitable shipyards is getting more important for ship management companies. This paper investigates a systematic evaluation model on docking facilities of shipyards to provide a decision aid for technical ship managers and to perform this responsibility in an efficient manner. Multiple criteria fuzzy axiomatic design (FAD) approach is used for selection among shipyards since FAD lets us define the design interval of each criterion. The original contributions of the paper are seemed in both enhancing the theoretical frame of FAD in terms of managing group consensus and performing an application to a real case in maritime industry.

Information axiom, one of two axioms of axiomatic design methodology which is proposed to improve a design, is used to select the best design among proposed designs. In the literature, there are a lot of studies related to using of information axiom for the solution of decision making problems. Moreover, applications of information axiom have been increasing day by day. However, calculation procedure of information axiom is not only incommodious but also difficult for decision makers. In this paper, a decision support system (DSS) based on fuzzy information axiom (FIA) is developed in order to make this decision procedure easy. The developed system consists of a knowledge base module including facts and rules, inference engine module including FIA and aggregation method, and a user interface module including entrance windows. The main aim of this study is to present a DSS tool to help the decision makers to solve their decision problems by modifying data-base of the program. In this paper, an application procedure will be presented based on the optimal selection of location for emergency service to illustrate the implementation procedure of the proposed model.

The strategic positions and geographical advantages of the Turkish container ports in the world transportation network create an excessive demand which seek urgent development strategies for managing ongoing problems in operational and administrative level. This paper proposes a hybrid approach on ensuring the competitiveness requirements for major Turkish container ports by utilizing fuzzy axiomatic design (FAD) and fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) methodologies to manage strategic decision-making with incomplete information. The outcomes of the quantitative models are utilized as data input for SWOT analysis that provide additional contributions for identifying the development strategies on container ports. The proposed strategies on Turkish container ports can be originally recommended as guidelines both for port administrations and new enterprises in Turkish maritime industry.

Monitoring the market has crucial roles for executing the shipping investment decisions in maritime transportation industry. The high level of managerial effort requires bringing market tendencies with the up-to-date data over dynamic parameters. This paper extends the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) principles towards shipping investment process via the originally proposed Ship of Quality (SoQ) framework. Furthermore, the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and Fuzzy Axiomatic Design (FAD) algorithms are integrated into the SoQ frame in order to involve quantitative outcomes into the shipping investment decisions. The SoQ is performed over a set of periodical data and recent trends of the principal crude oil tanker markets such as Very Large Crude Oil Carriers (VLCCs), Suezmaxes, and Aframaxes in order to ensure the illustrative results. As an effective investment tool, the proposed SoQ model is expected to provide invaluable decision aid for the relevant shipping executives.

Nowadays, the internet is the most widely used and an effective tool for firms/organizations to reach their customers by their websites. Hence, effective design of websites helps firms/organizations to reach their aim. There are lots of design parameters that play an effective role on website design. These parameters are considered by researchers in some academic papers. However, none of the published articles takes into account both interactions among the design parameters and importance degrees of design parameters in terms of website types. Therefore, in the scope of this paper, in order to address these research gaps, an integrated multiple criteria decision making method including Delphi and DEMATEL (DEcision-MAking Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) techniques has been proposed for determining importance degrees of website design parameters. Furthermore, the website design parameters were determined based on detailed review of literature available. In addition, a new classification has been presented for websites. Finally, this paper indicates that the importance degrees of website design parameters are based on both website types and interaction among the design parameters. To illustrate the steps of the proposed algorithm, an application has been presented. Highlights? This study deals with determining importance degrees of website design parameters. ? Each importance degree is based on website type and interaction among parameters. ? In this study, a new website classification and an integrated method is presented. ? This article helps website designers to select suitable design parameters.

Design quality of websites is known to have a positive impact on user attention. Although there are lots of papers that investigate design qualities of websites in the literature, none of them takes into account interactions among design characteristics. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the perceived design quality of websites while considering the interactions among design characteristics. For this purpose, a new approach named the quality evaluation model (QuEM), which includes fuzzy set theory, the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory method (DEMATEL), and generalized Choquet integral techniques, is proposed. The critical design characteristics of websites are determined based on interactions among them by using DEMATEL. Then, the degrees of importance are utilized in the generalized Choquet integral to evaluate the perceived design quality of website designs. Fuzzy set theory is utilized to cope with ambiguity in the linguistic evaluation of the different design characteristics and supports the analysis of the collected data. Finally, the proposed method is applied for the evaluation of the quality of the most used shopping websites in Turkey.

The performance of a human-machine system is related to interaction between human and machine. The main aim of the indicators used in a human machine system is to satisfy the interaction. This paper focuses on the design of indicator panel for passenger cars based on the axiomatic design principles. In this study, axiomatic design principles proposed by Suh are used under fuzzy environment. Both independence axiom and information axiom are utilized. The independence axiom is used for the following goals; (1) obtaining a design map, (2) determining design parameters and their importance, and (3) calculating the functional independency of the proposed design. In the scope of this paper, to calculate the functional independence, new formulas are presented under fuzzy environment differing from classical axiomatic design principles. Then, information axiom is used to determine the best design among the designs that satisfy independence axiom and put forward to suitable design characteristics. Furthermore the importances of functional requirements for the indicator panel design are determined by using fuzzy analytic hierarchy process in the presented study.
