An interactive sorting method for additive utility functions

Murat Köksalan; Selin Özpeynirci

In this paper, we consider the problem of placing alternatives that are defined by multiple criteria into preference-ordered categories. We consider a method that estimates an additive utility function and demonstrate that it may misclassify many alternatives even when substantial preference information is obtained from the decision maker (DM) to estimate the function. To resolve this difficulty, we develop an interactive approach. Our approach occasionally requires the DM to place some reference alternatives into categories during the solution process and uses this information to categorize other alternatives. The approach guarantees to place all alternatives correctly for a DM whose preferences are consistent with any additive utility function. We demonstrate that the approach works well using data derived from ranking global MBA programs as well as on several randomly generated problems.

Bounding approaches for operation assignment and capacity allocation problem in flexible manufacturing systems

Selin Özpeynirci

This study considers an operation assignment and capacity allocation problem that arises in flexible manufacturing systems. Automated machines are assumed to have scarce time and tool magazine capacities and the tools are available in limited quantities. The aim is to select a subset of operations with maximum total weight. The weight of an operation may represent its profit, processing load, relative priority. Several upper bounding procedures have been taken into account. The results of computational tests have revealed that the proposed upper bounding procedures produce satisfactory solutions in reasonable CPU times. We suggest using some of the bounds when the quality of the solutions is more important than the speed of achieving them and some others when the speed is more important than the quality.

An interactive approach for multiple criteria selection problem

Özgür Özpeynirci; Selin Özpeynirci; Anıl Kaya

In this study, we develop an interactive algorithm for the multiple criteria selection problem that aims to find the most preferred alternative among a set of known alternatives evaluated on multiple criteria. We assume the decision maker (DM) has a quasi-concave value function that represents his/her preferences. The interactive algorithm selects the pairs of alternatives to be asked to the DM based on the estimated likelihood that one alternative is preferred to another. After the DM selects the preferred alternative, a convex cone is generated based on this preference information and the alternatives dominated by the cone are eliminated. Then, the algorithm updates the likelihood information for the unselected pairwise questions. The aim of the algorithm is to detect the most preferred alternative by performing as few pairwise comparisons as possible. We present the algorithm on an illustrative example problem. We also develop a mathematical model that finds the minimum number of questions that can be asked to the DM to determine the most preferred alternative under perfect information. We use the minimum number of questions to develop strategies for interactive algorithm and measure its performance. HighlightsWe consider the multiple criteria selection problem (MCSP).We propose an interactive algorithm using convex cones for MCSP.We compute the minimum number of pairwise comparisons required to detect the best alternative.

Capacity allocation problem in flexible manufacturing systems: branch and bound based approaches

Selin Özpeynirci

This study considers an operation assignment and capacity allocation problem that arises in flexible manufacturing systems. The machines have limited time and tool magazine capacities and the available tools are limited. Our objective is to maximise total weight of assigned operations. We develop a branch and bound algorithm that finds the optimal solutions and a beam search algorithm that finds high quality solutions in polynomial time.

An interactive probabilistic approach to multi-criteria sorting

Asli Gül Buğdaci; Murat Köksalan; Selin Özpeynirci; Yasemin Serin

This article addresses the problem of sorting alternatives evaluated by multiple criteria among preference-ordered classes. An interactive probabilistic sorting approach is developed in which the probability of an alternative being in each class is calculated and alternatives are assigned to classes keeping the probability of incorrect assignments below a specified small threshold value. The decision maker is occasionally required to place alternatives to classes. The probabilities for unassigned alternatives are updated in light of the new information and the procedure is repeated until all alternatives are classified. This is the first sorting approach reported in the literature to use an explicit probability of classifying alternatives that is consistent with the underlying preference structure of the decision maker. The proposed approach is demonstrated in a problem concerning the sorting MBA programs.

A note on “A mixed integer programming model for advanced planning and scheduling (APS)”

Arslan M. Örnek; Selin Özpeynirci; Cemalettin Öztürk

In a recent paper, Chen and Ji [Chen, K., Ji, P., 2007. A mixed integer programming model for advanced planning and scheduling (APS). European Journal of Operational Research 181, 515-522] develop a mixed integer programming model for advanced planning and scheduling problem that considers capacity constraints and precedence relations between the operations. The orders require processing of several operations on eligible machines. The model presented in the above paper works for the case where each operation can be processed on only one machine. However, machine eligibility means that only a subset of machines are capable of processing a job and this subset may include more than one machine. We provide a general model for advanced planning and scheduling problems with machine eligibility. Our model can be used for problems where there are alternative machines that an operation can be assigned to.

Beam search algorithm for capacity allocation problem in flexible manufacturing systems

Selin Özpeynirci

This study considers the operation assignment and tool allocation problem in flexible manufacturing systems. A set of operations together with their required tools are selected so as to maximize the total weight. The machines have limited time and tool magazine capacities and the tools are available in limited quantities. We develop a beam search algorithm and obtain near optimal solutions for large size problems very quickly.

A Lagrangean relaxation based approach for the capacity allocation problem in flexible manufacturing systems

Selin Özpeynirci

This study considers the operation assignment and capacity allocation problem in flexible manufacturing systems. A set of operations is selected to be processed and assigned to the machines together with their required tools. The purchase or usage of the required tools incurs a cost. The machines have scarce time and tool magazine capacities. The objective is to maximize the total weight of the assigned operations minus the total tooling costs. We use Lagrangean relaxation approach to obtain upper and lower bounds on the optimal objective function values. The computational experiments show that our approach provides near optimal bounds in reasonable solution times.

Parallel machine scheduling with tool loading: a constraint programming approach

Burak Gökgür; Brahim Hnich; Selin Özpeynirci

Abstract This paper presents constraint programming models that aim to solve scheduling and tool assignment problems in parallel machine environments. There are a number of jobs to be processed on parallel machines. Each job requires a set of tools, but limited number of tools are available in the system due to economic restrictions. The problem is to assign the jobs and the required tools to machines and to determine the schedule so that the makespan is minimised. Three constraint programming models are developed and compared with existing methods described in the literature.

Multi-Criteria Sorting with Category Size Restrictions

Murat Köksalan; Vincent Mousseau; Selin Özpeynirci

We consider the multi-criteria sorting problem where alternatives that are evaluated on multiple criteria are assigned into ordered categories. We focus on the sorting problem with category size restrictions, where the decision maker (DM) may have some concerns or constraints on the number of alternatives that should be assigned to some of the categories. We develop an approach based on the UTADIS method that fits an additive utility function to represent the decision maker’s preferences. We introduce additional variables and constraints to enforce the restrictions on the sizes of categories. The new formulation reduces the number of binary variables and hence decreases the computational effort compared to the existing approaches in the literature. We further improve the computational efficiency by developing lower and upper bounds on the rank of each alternative in order to narrow down the set of categories that each alternative can be assigned to. We demonstrate our approach on two applications from practice.
