DETERMINATION OF ORGANOCHLORINE AND POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS PESTICIDES IN HONEY FROM DIFFERENT REGIONS IN ROMANIA

Simona Dobrinas; Semaghiul Birghila; Valentina Coatu

In this study honey collected from local markets or made by private peasants from eighteen regions of Romania during years 2002-2004 were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). An analytical procedure based on liquid-liquid extraction with n-hexane followed by gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD) has been developed. For clean-up and preconcentration purposes was used a usual sorbent material (florisil). Limits of detection were from 0.02 and 0.05 μg /Kg. The pesticide endrin was the most frequently detected in 61% of the samples, followed by dieldrin in 16% of the samples. DDT and their metabolites were detected in 11% of the samples. Results indicate that honey consumers should not be concerned about the amounts of organic pollutants found in Romanian honey.

Seasonal variation and speciation of dissolved iron in an artificial surface water body

Semaghiul Birghila; Georgiana Baronescu; Anca Dumbrava

Abstract The aquatic chemistry of iron is an important issue since iron is a micronutrient for the growth of phytoplankton. Its concentration in surface waters involves many environmental aspects, from the quality of a particular water to the control of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Dissolved iron can exist in water as ferrous and ferric iron, and the equilibrium between these two forms, as well as the precipitation and solubilization of iron, depends on many natural and anthropic factors. We studied the variation for an year of Fe(II) and total iron concentration into Poarta Alba - Midia Navodari Canal, an artificial surface water which connects Danube River with Black Sea. The results indicate a high iron concentration in surface water and a seasonal variation of iron concentration and speciation, which can be correlated with the oxidable matter content.

CONTENT OF ORGANIC POLLUTANTS (PAHS AND POPS) IN SURFACE WATERS FROM DANUBE DELTA AND PLITVICE LAKES

Simona Dobrinas; Alina Socaenu; Semaghiul Birghila; Viorica Popescu; Nicoleta Matei; Valentina Coatu

The objective of this work was to assess the contents of selected organic pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs and organochlorine pesticides POPs) in the surface waters of Danube Delta and Plitvice Lakes. These organic pollutants are among the most prevalent pollutants, being detected in almost all environmental compartments. The analyses of PAHs were performed by gas chromatography with mass spectrometer detector (GC-MS) and that of POPs by gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD).

Determination of heavy metals and c vitamin in allium plants (garlic and onion)

Simona Dobrinas; Nicoleta Matei; Semaghiul Birghila; Viorica Popescu; Alina Soceanu

Analyses of plants render important information in toxicological and environmental investigations since plants are a very significant link in the trophic chain. The aim of this study was to analyze quantitatively the distribution of heavy metals and ascorbic acid in Allium plants: Allium sativum L. (garlic) and Allium cepa L. (onion). Heavy metals accumulation in garlic and onion was quantified by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) after the chemical mineralization of the samples with nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide in a Digesthal device. To determinate of vitamin C we used a titrimetric method with potassium brommat-bromide solution in acid medium, when vitamin C is oxidized to dehidroascorbic acid by bromine. Our results indicate a high concentration of vitamin C in leaves of the studied Allium plants.
