Limit analysis of orthotropic plates

J.S. Kao; T. Mura; Seng-Lip Lee

Abstract An analysis of the carrying capacity of orthotropic plates based upon the yield criterion suggested by Hill is presented. Numerical examples are given in terms of uniformly loaded square plates simply supported on the boundary. For isotropic plates the analysis yields results identical to those obtained by Hodge.

Dynamic stability of discrete spherical structural systems in fluid media

J. F. Carney; L. F. Mockros; Seng-Lip Lee

SummaryThe dynamic response of a two degree of freedom spherical structural system immersed in viscous fluid media is studied with the fluid reactions obtained byBasset included in the differential equations of motion. Closed form solutions for the response of such systems are presented and a dynamic stability criterion based on the form of the solutions is developed. The solutions and the stability criterion are applicable to the limiting case when the system is surrounded by a vacuum. The various regions of stability and instability are delineated, and it is shown that the type of instability is significantly influenced by the physical properties of the surrounding fluid medium.ÜbersichtEs wird das Verhalten eines mechanischen Systems von zwei Freiheitsgraden untersucht, das aus zwei miteinander verbundenen, kugelförmigen Massen in einer zähen Flüssigkeit besteht.

Dynamic response of a two degree of freedom spherical system in a fluid

J. F. CarneyIII; L. F. Mockros; Seng-Lip Lee

SummaryThe steady state and transient response of a two degree of freedom spherical system immersed in a viscous fluid medium, initially at rest, is investigated with the inclusion of the fluid reaction derived by Basset in the differential equations of motion. In the steady state study, phase angle and amplitude ratio curves are presented from which the mode shapes of the system, for wide ranges of density ratio, frequency ratio and Stokes number, can be obtained. In the investigation of transient response, the system is subjected to impulsive base displacements and the equations of motion are solved numerically.

Mises limit load for simply supported conical sandwich shells under internal pressure

R. H. Bryant; Seng-Lip Lee; T. Mura

SummaryA variational method for calculating the lower and upper bounds on the safety factor of perfectly plastic simply supported conical sandwich shells subjected to a uniform internal pressure and obeying Mises yield criteria is presented. The solutions obtained by the proposed method are compared with those obtained by means of the classical method using the two-moment limited interaction yield condition based on Tresca yield criterion.ÜbersichtEs wird eine Variationsmethode zur Berechnung der unteren und oberen Schranken für den Sicherheitsfaktor von konischen Sandwich-Schalen angegeben, die aus vollkommen plastischem, dem v.

Transient response of a piecewise linear inelastic system to impulsive loading

William E. Saul; J.F. Fleming; Seng-Lip Lee

Abstract The transient response of single-degree-of-freedom systems with bilinear hysteresis is discussed. The application pertains to structures of strain hardening material. It is shown that the response of a linear strain hardening inelastic system is enveloped by the corresponding elastic and elastic-perfectly plastic systems, which are limiting cases of the general problem. It is further noted that in the presence of strain hardening, maximum displacement is contained regardless of the duration of applied load, and increases almost linearly with the magnitude of the applied load.

EXTENDED THEOREMS OF LIMIT ANALYSIS OF ANISOTROPIC SOLIDS

W.H. Rimawi; T. Mura; Seng-Lip Lee

ABSTRACT The extended theorems of limit analysis presented recently by the authors for isotropic solids are generalized to include the effect of anisotropy. In these theorems both the upper and the lower bounds are expressed in terms of functional which may be optimized to yield the best bounds. This results in a systematic procedure for the evaluation of the lower bound superior to the procedure of trial and error of the classic theorem. To illustrate the use of the proposed theorems a plane stress problem is solved using the yield criterion suggested by Hill. It consists of an orthotropic slab with a slit subjected to uniaxial tension. The same problem is also treated by the classic theorems for the purpose of comparison. The result for the isotropic case is found to agree with existing solutions.
