Seojun Kim; Kwonkyu Yu; Byung-Man Yoon

Surface Image Velocimetry (SIV) is a recently-developed discharge measurement instrument. It uses image processing techniques to measure the water surface velocity and estimate water discharge with given cross section. The present study aims to implement a FSIV (Fixed-type Surface Image Velocimetry) at Soojeon Bridge in the Dalcheon. The hardware system consists of two digital cameras, a computer, and a pressure-type water stage gauge. The images taken with the hardware system are sent to a server computer via a wireless internet, and analyzed with a image processing software (SIV software). The estimated discharges were compared with the observed discharges through Goesan dam spillway and index velocity method using ADVM. The computed results showed a good agreement with the observed one, except for the night time. The results compared with discharges through Goesan dam spillway reached around 5~10% in the case of discharge over 30 m3/s, and the results compared with discharges through index velocity method using ADVM reached around 5% in the case of discharge over 200 . Considering the low cost of the system and the visual inspection of the site situation with the images, the SIV would be fairly good way to measure water discharge in real time.

【It is necessary to perform the precise analysis of unsteady flow for effective design of the side-weir detention basin installed in the river. Generally, the HEC-RAS program, which is a 1D unsteady numerical model, is mostly used to simulate the unsteady flow for rivers. However, it is difficult to have confidence of unsteady flow results simulated by HEC-RAS due to the lack of experimental data and field monitoring data for the channel with a side-weir detention basin. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to validate or verify the simulation results calculated by HEC-RAS through the experiments for the open channel with a side-weir detention basin using specially-designed unsteady discharge-supply system. The experimental cases included unsteady flows in the straight channel with and without a side-weir detention basin. Especially, for the case with a detention basin, the experiment was performed to consider only the free flow condition over the side-weir. The study results showed that values of water level and discharge obtained from HEC-RAS coincided reasonably with experimental results with the maximum error of 3% for water level and 1% for discharge in the case of the flow without the side-weir detention basin and 4% for water level and 2% for discharge with the side-weir detention basin.】

Kwonkyu Yu; Seojun Kim; Byeongnam Yoo; Inhyuk Bae

In flow velocity measurement of natural rivers, taking images with proper image quality is the fundamental and the most important step. Since flood peaks generally occur in night time, it is very difficult to capture proper images in that time. The present study aims to test a far infra-red camera as a adequate alternative to resolve the various problems in measuring flood discharges. The far infra-red cameras are able to capture images in night time without help of any extra illuminations. Futhermore they are not affected by fog nor smoke, hence they can be adapted for a fixed-type surface image velocimeters. For comparison, a commercial camcorder and a near infra-red cameras were used together. The test images were taken at a day time and a night time, and the image acquisition work were performed at an artificial flow channel of the Andong River Experiment Station. The analyzed results showed that the far infra-red camera would be a good instrument for surface image velocimeters, since they were able to capture regardless light condition. There are, however, a few minor problems in their accuracy of the analyzed results. About their accuracy a more study would be required.

Un Ji; Seojun Kim; Byung-Man Yoon; Sanghyuk Kim

AbstractTo design the off-stream detention basin by the sides of rivers or channels, flood-level reduction in main channels should be evaluated under unsteady flow. Flow discharge diverted to the side weir from the main stream can be calculated practically by the standard weir or lateral weir equations. In this study, experimental and numerical modeling with a side-weir detention basin was conducted for unsteady flow. The experimental results were compared with the numerical backwater profile calculation considering the water discharge overflowed into the basin from the channel. The overflowed discharge was estimated by the standard weir and lateral weir equations for various flow types at the side weir. The standard weir equation accurately predicted flow discharge diverted to the side weir for free overflow condition. The lateral weir equation calculated a precise flood level and time of peak flow for the condition modeled, especially when the various flows, including free and submerged overflows, were ...

Measurement of Two-Dimensional Velocity Distribution of Spatio-Temporal Image Velocimeter using Cross-Correlation Analysis

Kwonkyu Yu; Seojun Kim; Dong-Su Kim

Surface image velocimetry was introduced as an efficient and sage alternative to conventional river flow measurement methods during floods. The conventional surface image velocimetry uses a pair of images to estimate velocity fields using cross-correlation analysis. This method is appropriate to analyzing images taken with a short time interval. It, however, has some drawbacks; it takes a while to analyze images for the verage velocity of long time intervals and is prone to include errors or uncertainties due to flow characteristics and/or image taking conditions. Methods using spatio-temporal images, called STIV, were developed to overcome the drawbacks of conventional surface image velocimetry. The grayscale-gradient tensor method, one of various STIVs, has shown to be effectively reducing the analysis time and is fairly insusceptible to any measurement noise. It, unfortunately, can only be applied to the main flow direction. This means that it can not measure any two-dimensional flow field, e.g. flow in the vicinity of river structures and flow around river bends. The present study aimed to develop a new method of analyzing spatio-temporal images in two-dimension using cross-correlation analysis. Unlike the conventional STIV, the developed method can be used to measure two-dimensional flow substantially. The method also has very high spatial resolution and reduces the analysis time. A verification test using artificial images with lid-driven cavity flow showed that the maximum error of the method is less than 10 % and the average error is less than 5 %. This means that the developed scheme seems to be fairly accurate, even for two-dimensional flow.

Development and Accuracy Analysis of the Discharge-Supply System to Generate Hydrographs for Unsteady Flow in the Open Channel

Seojun Kim; Sanghyuk Kim; Byung-Man Yoon; Un Ji

The analysis for unsteady flow is necessary to design the hydraulic structures affected by water level and discharge changes through time. The numerical model has been generally used for unsteady flow analysis, however it is difficult to acquire field data to calibrate and validate the numerical model. Even though it is possible to collect field data for some case, high cost and labor are required and sometimes it is considered that the confidence of measured data is very low. In this case, the experimental data for unsteady flow can be used to calibrate and validate the numerical model as an alternative. Therefore, the discharge-supply system which could generate various type of unsteady flow hydrograph was developed in this study. Also, the accuracy of the unsteady flow hydrograph generated by developed dischargesupply system in the experiment was evaluated by comparing with target hydrograph. Accuracy errors and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) were analyzed for the rectangular-type hydrograph with sudden changes of flow, triangular-type hydrograph with short peak time, and bell-type flood hydrograph. As a result, the generating error of the discharge-supply system for the rectangular-type hydrograph was about 59% which was maximum error among various types. Also, it was represented that RMSE for the triangular-type hydrographs with single and double peaks were approximately corresponding to 10%. However, RMSE for the bell-type flood hydrograph was lower than 2%.

Seong-Yong Park; Seojun Kim; Seung-Hwi Lee; Byung-Man Yoon

The local migration or movement behavior of fishes in streams are related to feeding, spawning, growing, dispersing, and refuging. The pale chub (Zacco platypus) is a dominant species that migrates locally and inhabits in river and stream in Korea. However, dams, weirs, culverts and other regulatory structures are physical barriers that limit fish movement and fragment habits and populations. If main stream and off-channel habitats are connected with culverts, they would restrict the small fish as pale chub movement due to the high flow velocities and low depths. But in Korea, there is no experimental study to evaluate the swimming performance of species in Korea. Therefore, it is difficult to proposed that design guidelines for pass fishes through culverts. The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate the swimming performance of pale chubs. A series of swimming performance test has been used in both of the fixed velocity and the incremental velocity methods in an experimental flume. As a result, the critical swimming speed for pale chub(body length 8.9 cm) was found to be about 0.7 m/s. Therefore, the flow velocity for culvert design in the low flow condition should not be exceed the its swimming ability, especially 0.7 m/s for pale chubs(body length 8.9 cm). And the minimum depth for culvert design in the low flow condition should not be lower than the fish body height add a dorsal fin height.

Design Procedure for Determining Optimal Length of Side-Weir in Flood Control Detention Basin Considering Bed Roughness Coefficient

Seojun Kim; Byung-Man Yoon; Sanghuk Kim; Dong-Su Kim

AbstractSide-weir detention basins have been increasingly highlighted as an alternative countermeasure for decreasing peak flood discharge and have become increasingly adopted as part of an integrated watershed flood protection plan. However, there were few methodologies sufficient enough to quantitatively estimate the decrease of the peak flow by the side-weir detention basin in flood-control measures by fully considering relevant design and hydraulic parameters. Until now, any noticeable standardized design procedure to optimally design the size of a side-weir located at the inlet of a detention basin has not been available. In this study, a generalized design procedure was proposed for determining the horizontal length of a side-weir considering hydraulic parameters, especially for the bed roughness as a major hydraulic parameter, where other hydraulic parameters were assumed to be invariant and restricted by field conditions. The proposed design procedure is exemplified based on a simple numerical mod...

Accuracy Analysis of Velocity and Water Depth Measurement in the Straight Channel using ADCP

Jongmin Kim; Dong-Su Kim; Geunsoo Son; Seojun Kim

ADCPs have been highlighted so far for measuring steramflow discharge in terms of their high-order of accuracy, relatively low cost and less field operators driven by their easy in-situ operation. While ADCPs become increasingly dominant in hydrometric area, their actual measurement accuracy for velocity and bathymetry measurement has not been sufficiently validated due to the lack of reliable bench-mark data, and subsequently there are still many uncertain aspects for using ADCPs in the field. This research aimed at analyzing inter-comparison results between ADCP measurements with respect to the detailed ADV measurement in a specified field environment. Overall, 184 ADV points were collected for densely designed grids for the given cross-section that has 6 m of width, 1 m of depth, and 0.7 m/s of averaged mean flow velocity. Concurrently, ADCP fixed-points measurements were conducted for each 0.2m and 0.02m of horizontal and vertical spacing respectively. The inter-comparison results indicated that ADCP matched ADV velocity very accurately for 0.4~0.8 of relative depth (y/h), but noticeable deviation occurred between them in near surface and bottom region. For evaluating the capacity of measuring bathymetry of ADCPs, bottom tracking bathymetry based on oblique beams showed better performance than vertical beam approach, and similar results were shown for fixed and moving-boat method as well. Error analysis for velocity and bathymetry measurements of ADCP can be potentially able to be utilized for the more detailed uncertainty analysis of the ADCP discharge measurement.

Seong-Yong Park; Ji-Woong Choi; Byung-Man Yoon; Seojun Kim

The pale chub (Zacco platypus) is a dominant species that migrates locally and inhabits in rivers in Korea. The fish movement at confluences or hydraulic connections is very important especially for the life of small fish as pale chub. If main stream and off-channel habitats are connected with culverts, they would restrict the fish movement due to the high flow velocities and low depths. In foreign conturies, design flow conditions of fish friendly culvert, including flood flow capacity and fish-passage flow capacity, were assigned. Installation of culvert fishways is one way to improve the fish-passing capacity of culverts. On the contrary, in Korea, the design flow of culvert contains only the flood flow capacity. The effect of the fish passage with offset baffles was tested with the fixed velocity method in an experimental flume. As a result, An occasion velocity 1.2m/s, proportional success of pale chubs pass is maximum 20% improve than without baffle flume for energy dissipate. Offset baffle fishway(baffle height 5cm) provides that resting areas and/or a continuous channel of low velocity water in culverts. Especially, short baffle areas are domain where the pale chubs pass. And, FLOW-3D, a three dimentional numerical model, was used in order to evaluate detailed hydraulic characteristics and application possibility in a culvert fishway design.
