Sang-Ku Yeo; Hyun-Chul Lee; Seong-Seok Go

International construction market has been depressed significantly after 2000. Exclusive techniques and advanced construction management methods are desperately in demand so as to ensure the competitiveness in unlimited competition. Although public construction delivery system has been revised several times starting with introduction of the lowest bidding system in 1951, there has been no remarkable achievement whenever new system was introduced. This study analyzed the successful stories of developed countries like Europe, USA and Japan to settle successful rating system down and vitalize the best value system in Korea, which was introduced in October 2007. We constructed the bidder evaluation system for domestic situation, and designed the evaluation tool which is useful in utilization. Since this study were analyzed on only same systems of developed countries and domestic similar cases, this study is limited to typical construction in Korea. The study of specialized rating system in the field related should be followed.

A Study on the Intensive Safety Management Items of Small-Sized Construction Sites

Seong-Seok Go; Do-Heom Song; Yun-Ra Jang

Department of Architectural Engineering, Graduate School, Chonnam National University(Received June 11, 2013 / Accepted September 17, 2013)Abstract : Almost accidents in construction sites are occurred by unsafe work conditions and failure making safe environment. As recent construction projects become more complex, various and diversified, So the potential of construction-related accidents is increased as well. Comparing the frequency of construction-related accidents in large-sized construction sites, small-sized construction sites are more vulnerable because of lack of workforce and less effective technology system. Furthermore, the absence of safety committee, poor financial condition leads to lack of safety education, installation of safety facilities, and provision of individual protective equipment, which indicates difficulties handling even basic safety management. Therefore, in order to lower the hazard rate at small-Sized construction sites, it is necessary to proceed with more structural and thorough actions for preventing accidents. In other words, it is necessary to analyze the causes of the accidents at small-sized construction sites, set criteria for safety management, and suggest safety management items according to work classification by evaluating the relative importance of the items.Key Words : small-sized construction sites, safety management, safe environment, construction-related accidents

Hyeon-Ku Park; Seung-Hee Yang; Seong-Seok Go

More and more domestic skyscrapers have been rapidly constructed to get enough living space for people living in overcrowded cities. The purpose of skyscrapers is to provide citizens with useful facilities and to establish landmarks and also national and regional symbols. Previous studies have been conducted which focused on the structure, materials, plans, maintenance, and relevant information regarding skyscrapers. Skyscrapers, however, are different from other smaller buildings regarding the residential environment as well as in other ways. Recently, several problems have been raised in that the indiscreetness of current skyscrapers cannot guarantee residents a high quality living environment, and they might contain risks unless criteria are put forward to ensure that the design and facilities provide for this aim. It is judged that a set of performance criteria for the residential environment to ensurethe residents` quality of life could solve this problem. This study therefore aims to suggest a method for the improvement of the residential environment of skyscrapers by establishing residential environment evaluation factors. In conclusion, this study calculates the weight of each evaluation factor using AHP (an analytic hierarchy process) and suggests evaluating criteria. It is expected that this study could be used to propose guidelines for residents at the design and planning stage of building a skyscraper.

Performance Evaluation of Cement Mixed Polymer Type Waterproofing Material

Dong-Sik Oh; Seong-Seok Go

This study aims to propose a performance metric for the application of a horizontal air-exhausting system to be used for the reduction of vapor and/or moisture that exists in the waterproof layer, by evaluating the physical properties. For this reason, tests in accordance with current standards were carried out, and the results were examined. Finally, a proposal was established for a general performance metric that could be applied as fundamental data based on the user`s judgment. This has some limitations, in that the object is existing merchandise, however it should be useful for application in the construction field. In the future, analysis of a wider area, including workability, should be added in the phase of field application.

Strength Properties of Activated Hwangtoh Mortars

Dong-Sik Oh; Do-Heom Song; Seong-Seok Go

Hwangtoh (loess) has pozzolanic properties that mean it can be used as a cement admixture when activated at high temperatures, and that it can be used in combination with building materials such as fly ash or blast furnace slag. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the compressive strength and the brick bond strength of various mortars containing hwangtoh, and also to find the optimum mixing conditions for the use of hwangtoh. It was found that the mortars’ strength properties are significantly influenced by the water/cement ratio W/C and the activated hwangtoh substitution ratio. We recommend the following materials and mixing conditions: W/C 60%, a cement substitution ratio of activated hwangtoh of 20 ~ 25%, and the addition of 10% blast furnace slag to improve the compressive strength of such mortars.

A Study on the Accident Case and Analysis on the Actual Condition of Construction Machinery in Railroad Construction Sites

Du-Hyun Son; Do-Heom Song; Seong-Seok Go

Recently, railroad’s preference greatly increased as the environment-friendly means of transportation as the importance in the aspects of environment and energy efficiency. So the government established the Korea Rail Network Authority which takes full charge of railroad construction in 20047 for regular railroad construction to combine major key points in the whole country with each other to be one city region by connecting them to each other to be within the commute time range of a hour and thirty minutes. And it has arranged large-scale railroad construction by establishing plans to build the 1st and 2nd national railroad networks as the national project and investing about 100 trillion won in it from 2006 to 2020. As large-scale railroad construction is promoted as the national project like this, there has been a string of safety accidents in it due to the large and complex construction project. As the government strengthened the safety accident prevention plans, safety accidents have tended to decrease in 2011. However, accidents of construction machinery have found to increase. Therefore, this study tried to investigate accident cases of the Korea Rail Network Authority for the recent 5 years and analyze accidents of construction machinery to prevent them in railroad construction sites and suggest accident prevention plans due to it by conducting, investigating, and analyzing the survey of its operators and superintendents of the construction sites and drawing the problems.

Seong-Seok Go; Sang-Ku Yeo; Hyun-Chul Lee

This study aimed to mix and test mortar incorporating activated Hwangtoh to improve the Hwangtoh brick bond strength of brick structures. To do this, the bond strength correlation of mortar was analyzed by means of materials and experiment factors and levels, and the optimum conditions were suggested after analyzing the physical properties of brick and the mix ratio of mortar and additive. Furthermore, the compressive strength and bond strength were found to be in inverse proportion, and in terms of the materials and mixing level, W/C ratio, substitution ratio of activated Hwangtoh, and fine aggregate grading were shown to have a considerable influence on the strength. In conclusion, the optimum mixing conditions to improve the bond strength are found to set W/C ratio at 65% and replacmenet ratio of activated Hwangtoh at 10%.
