UNLABELLED This study aimed to identify the effect of IV infiltration management program among hospitalized children. DESIGN AND METHODS This was a quasi-experimental study with history comparison group design with 2,894 catheters inserted during 3 months comparison phase and 3,651 catheters inserted during 4 months experimental phase. The intervention was composed of seven activities including applying poster, documentation of catheter insertion, parents education, making infiltration report, assessment of vein condition before inserting catheter, appropriate site selection, and documentation of catheter insertion, and assessment of peripheral catheter insertion site every shift. Data were analyzed using of X2-test, Fishers exact test. RESULTS The infiltration incidence rate was 0.9% for experimental group and 4.4% for comparison group, which was significantly different (x2=80.42, p<.001). The catheter maintenance period (p=.035) and infiltration state (p=.039) were significantly different among participants with infiltration between comparison and experimental groups. CONCLUSIONS IV Infiltration management program was founded to be effective in reducing the IV infiltration incidence rate and increasing early detection of IV infiltration. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Considering the effect of IV Infiltration management program, we recommend that this infiltration management program would be widely used in the clinical settings.

This retrospective study was aimed to identify risk factors of intravenous (IV) infiltration for hospitalized children. The participants were 1,174 children admitted to a general hospital, who received peripheral intravenous injection therapy at least once, and had complete records. Data were analyzed with frequency and percentage or mean and standard deviation were calculated, and odds ratio (OR) from univariate and multiple logistic regressions. The number and % of infiltrations were 92 and 7.8%, respectively. IV infiltration risk factors were lower limb (OR = 1.72), phenytoin (OR = 11.03), 10% dextrose (OR = 6.55), steroids (OR = 6.21), vancomycin (OR = 4.10), high-concentration electrolytes (OR = 3.49), and ampicillin/sulbactam combination (OR = 3.37). Nurses working at children’s hospitals should consider the risk of IV infiltration for children receiving IV infusion therapy and make a preventive effort to identify IV infiltration in high-risk children at an early stage.

PURPOSE This study was done to develop a internalized stigma reducing program based on cognitive-behavioral therapy and appropriate for patients with schizophrenia and to evaluate its effectiveness. METHODS The study design was a mixed method research. Qualitative study, 13 patients with schizophrenia who had experience in overcoming stigma were purposively chosen for interviews and data were analyzed using Giorgi method. Quantitative study, 64 patients with schizophrenia (experimental group=32, control group=32) were recruited. The cognitive-behavioral therapy-based program for reducing internalized stigma in patients with schizophrenia was provided for 8 weeks (12 sessions). Data were collected from June. 20, 2013 to Feb. 14, 2014. Quantitative data were analyzed using χ²-test, t-test, repeated measures ANOVA with the SPSS program. RESULTS Qualitative results, from the experience of coping with stigma in patients with schizophrenia seventeen themes and five themes-clusters were drawn up. Quantitative results showed that internalized stigma, self-esteem, mental health recovery and quality of life were significantly better in the experimental group compared to the control group. CONCLUSION Study findings indicate that this program for reducing internalized stigma in patients with schizophrenia is effective and can be recommended as a rehabilitation program intervention to help patients with schizophrenia to cope with internalized stigma.

Objectives: The middle school students face a turbulent period between the stages of childhood and adolescence. If effective mental health education can be provided over this period, it can help prevent behavioral and emotional difficulties of students. This study aims to understand the priority of mental health education as demanded by middle school students. Methods: The subjects of this study were 612 middle school students from five schools in the P city. A questionnaire arranged mental health education into 39 items for use as a tool in the study. For data analysis, followed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and multiple comparison analysis of Scheffe. Results: For general students, demand was highest for education on “Communication and Healthy Life,” followed by “Self-esteem,” “Stress,” “Interpersonal Relationships and School Life”. Conclusions: If education on mental health shall be offered at middle schools based on this study, education on how to communicate and lead a healthy life and improve self-esteem should go to general students to prevent behavioral and emotional difficulties. On the other hand, education and group programs for “Stress,” “Mental Problems in the Adolescent Period” and “Addiction” should be offered to students with mental health problems to help prevent behavioral and emotional difficulties.
