A short data burst mechanism for third generation CDMA wireless packet data

cdma2000 provides voice, data, and multimedia services over high speed wideband channels. Although a sophisticated MAC layer controls and improves the establishment and teardown of CDMA channels as needed by these services, there is sizeable overhead whenever dedicated channels are established from the dormant mode. This paper studies the particular case of low rate bursty packet data traffic that requires the transmission of small amounts of data called short data bursts (SDBs). A new mechanism is added to the MAC layer that alleviates the inefficiency of setting up and tearing down CDMA traffic channels from the dormant state for short data bursts. This mechanism may be used in conjunction with traffic channels for long bursts or non-bursty traffic. Mapping SDBs to physical channels and associated protocols are discussed along with an analysis of the efficiency improvement provided by SDBs for low rate bursty data.
