Seung Hak Kuk; Hyeon Soo Kim; Jai-Kyung Lee; Seung-Ho Han; Seong-Whan Park

This paper presents an ongoing project on the development of an e-Engineering framework proposed by KIMM (Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials). The framework is based on a number of advanced technologies, such as intelligent software agents, Web Services, and Service-Oriented Architecture. And it aims to provide an integrated design environment to support integrating personnel, design activities and engineering resources during product development process. Especially Service-Oriented Architecture and Web services technologies enable to utilize and integrate effectively various engineering resources on the geographically distributed computing environments. And intelligent agent technologies support cooperation and coordination mechanisms for the engineering resources and services. In this paper we describe an implementation of the framework in detail.

Robustness testing framework for Web services composition

Seung Hak Kuk; Hyeon Soo Kim

Recently with the rapid growth of network and changes of business environment, the enterprises require the integration of various information systems and their interoperation. The SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) based on Web services is widely used for integration of these information systems. And as the standard integration language for the business processes, BPEL (Business Process Execution Language) provides the way to integrate various services provided by the information system. Over the past few years, some types of studies have been made on testing compatibility, discriminating, and tracing of processes in the services composition area. But there were few efforts to solve the problems caused by composition of various services. Especially, there is no effort to test and to enhance the robustness of the services composition. In this paper, we suggest a framework for the robustness testing of the service composition based on WS-BPEL. It generates the virtual testing environment. Through this framework, we can verify the robustness of Web services compositions against various errors and/or exceptional cases.

Extending UML Meta-model for Android Application

Minhyuk Ko; Yongjin Seo; Bup-Ki Min; Seung Hak Kuk; Hyeon Soo Kim

UML is a standardized general-purpose software modeling language. Using the UML, a developer can model any systems easily because the UML provides well-defined modeling concepts and notations to describe elements of a system. The UML provides a mechanism to communicate between a developer and others when they are involved in modeling a system. However, it does not provide delicate concepts to express peculiar features of a specific system. Thus, in order to cope with the problem, the UML provides the extension mechanisms. Each feature of a specific system can be described with the UML extension mechanisms. In this article, we propose a meta-model for developing an application operated on the Android platform using the UML extension mechanisms. Since the modeling elements for the Android platform do not be supported by the standard UML we are convinced that the extended meta-model will facilitate efficient modeling when developing an Android application.

Service-Oriented Architecture Based e-Engineering Framework to Support Collaborative Design

Jai-Kyung Lee; Seung Hak Kuk; Hyeon Soo Kim; Seong-Whan Park

This paper presents the applicability of service-oriented architecture to an e-engineering framework. The existing e-engineering framework models product development as engineering processes based on the collaboration of different experts who are participated in the development. And it aims to provide an integrated design environment to support integrating personnel, design activities and engineering resources during product development process. The applicability of the service-oriented architecture and web services technologies enable the framework to utilize and integrate effectively various engineering resources on the geographically distributed computing environments. And intelligent agent technologies support cooperation and coordination mechanisms for the engineering resources and services. In this paper we describe an implementation of the framework in detail and the application of it to the performance evaluation system for centrifugal pumps as a case study.

Standard-Based Integrated Management System Implemented for Heterogeneous Distributed Systems in Naval Ship Combat Management System

Bup-Ki Min; Seung Hak Kuk; Yongjin Seo; Daegeon Mun; Sangpil Yun; Hyeon Soo Kim; Chumsu Kim

In response to higher price tags of software applications due to costly development efforts to scale them up, how to re-use legacy systems has drawn much attention. The navy has standardized the open-architecture combat system for that reason. This study suggests a method to apply already developed software and the one yet to be developed to an AMSM-based open-architecture common service environment. The system presented here deals with common services for management and monitoring based on an open architecture, representing heterogeneous systems using abstract information models independent of the system under management. The proposed method enables management and monitoring over the system without being affected by heterogeneous environment.

Approaches to Improving Reliability in e-Engineering Framework

Seung Hak Kuk; Hyeon Soo Kim; Jai-Kyung Lee; Seong-Whan Park

In order to improve productivity and quality of the products, there are many efforts to integrate and automate design/analysis processes based on various distributed engineering resources. KIMM (Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials) constructed SOA (Service Oriented Architecture)-based e-Engineering framework for flexible integration and automation of the engineering processes on the Web services environment. However, guaranteeing reliability in the engineering process is one of the new problems that must be solved in the e-Engineering framework. This paper presents two approaches to handle various exceptions that happen in the middle of the execution of the process. One is to introduce recovery activities into the engineering process modeling to handle exceptions caused by failures of the engineering resources; the other is to use log-based recovery techniques to recover from the system exceptions such as network failures or system crashes.

An Engineering Framework and Service Portal for the Integration of Cooperative Engineering Processes

Jai-Kyung Lee; Seong-Whan Park; Hyeon Soo Kim; Seung Hak Kuk

This paper presents an engineering framework and engineering service portal to support complex engineering design problems that consist of cooperative engineering processes. It aims at providing an integrated design environment to support the integration of personnel, design activities and engineering resources. The engineering framework automates and integrates various engineering processes that require huge amounts of information processing and problem solving, using the agent technology and a software wrapping method. The web-based engineering service portal provides a user interface for the engineering framework, and shares the results between engineers participating in the engineering design problems. To validate its usefulness, several industrial applications were applied to the framework. A performance analysis and shape modeling process of pump design is chosen as a case study.

Extended BPEL System for e-Engineering Framework Considering the Characteristics of Mechanical Engineering Services

Jai-Kyung Lee; Seung Hak Kuk; Hyeon Soo Kim; Seong-Whan Park

Product development in mechanical industry can be defined as an engineering process based on the collaboration between different experts using various engineering services. The e-Engineering framework aims to integrate engineering services and mediate between them for the processing of the engineering process. The collaboration within the framework is very similar to a business process, in terms of web service composition. However, the existing web service composition system shows some limitations when dealing with engineering services. This paper presents a QoS-based web service orchestration system for the e-Engineering framework by analyzing the characteristics of engineering services which usually perform numerical analysis. The characteristics of the services are expressed in the form of constraint and selection specification.

Automatic Generation of Testing Environments for Web Applications

Seung Hak Kuk; Hyeon Soo Kim

Recently Web applications have grown rapidly and have become more and more complex. As Web applications become more complex, there is a growing concern about their quality. But very little attention is paid to Web applications testing and there are scarce practical research efforts and tools. Thus, in this paper, we suggest the automatic generation methods of test environments and a prototype of an automated testing tool for Web applications. Through this process we can automate the testing processes for Web applications. In addition, the automated methods make our approach more effective than the existing research efforts.
