A Knowledge Map Based on a Keyword-Relation Network by Using a Research Paper Database in the Computer Engineering Field

Bo-Seok Jung; Yung-Keun Kwon; Seung-Jin Kwak

A knowledge map, which has been recently applied in various fields, is discovering characteristics hidden in a large amount of information and showing a tangible output to understand the meaning of the discovery. In this paper, we suggested a knowledge map for research trend analysis based on keyword-relation networks which are constructed by using a database of the domestic journal articles in the computer engineering field from 2000 through 2010. From that knowledge map, we could infer influential changes of a research topic related a specific keyword through examining the change of sizes of the connected components to which the keyword belongs in the keyword-relation networks. In addition, we observed that the size of the largest connected component in the keyword-relation networks is relatively small and groups of high-similarity keyword pairs are clustered in them by comparison with the random networks. This implies that the research field corresponding to the largest connected component is not so huge and many small-scale topics included in it are highly clustered and loosely-connected to each other. our proposed knowledge map can be considered as a approach for the research trend analysis while it is impossible to obtain those results by conventional approaches such as analyzing the frequency of an individual keyword.

The purpose of this study is to examine the ISO/DIS 11620 : 2007(library performance indicators) in terms of structures, objectives, and BSC, and to apply the selected performance indicators to the digital library services for the case of `B` University in Korea. Standardization of library statistics and of qualify or performance measures for libraries is carried on within ISO in the frame of the TC46/SC8/WG4. While the first edition of ISO 11620 grouped the indicators as to service areas, the ISO/DIS 11620:2007 uses the structure of the balanced scorecard(BSC). For the study, 44 performance indicators are grouped into traditional, hybrid. and digital libraries according to the characteristics of them. Ten selected Performance indicators, which are classified into digital libraries, are verified for the applicability.

A Study on Metadata for Sharing the Information of Earth Observation

Hye-Young Lee; Seung-Jin Kwak

The purpose of this study is to design the metadata for sharing and efficiently using the informations of Earth Observations in Korea. Recently the GEO(Group on Earth Observations) has been starting to manage all nation`s informations in a way that benefits the environment as well as humanity by taking a pulse of the plants. For that reason, we have to construct the infra-system to manage and integrate the 12 social benefit areas in Korea; disaster, health, energy, climate, water, biodiversity, agriculture, forest, ocean, space information and geographical information system(GIS). But these informations have only been managed with varied metadatas in each area of observation, and then it is difficult to integrate varied informations. In this study, we solve the problem with meta-metadata.

A Personalized Retrieval System Based on Classification and User Query

Kwang-Young Kim; Kang-Seop Shim; Seung-Jin Kwak

In this paper, we describe a developmental system for establishing personal information tendency based on user queries. For each query, the system classified it based on the category information using a kNN classifier. As category information, we used DDC field which is already assigned to each record in the database. The system accumulates category information for all user queries and the user`s personalized feature for the target database. We then developed a personalized retrieval system reflecting the personalized feature to produce search result. Our system re-ranks the result documents by adding more weights to the documents for which categories match with the user`s personalized feature. By using user`s tendency information, the ambiguity problem of the word could be solved. In this paper, we conducted experiments for personalized search and word sense disambiguation (WSD) on a collection of Korean journal articles of science and technology arena. Our experimental result and user`s evaluation show that the performance of the personalized search system and WSD is proved to be useful for actual field services.
