A new control protocol for home appliances-LnCP

Koon-Seok Lee; Hoan-Jong Choi; Chang-Ho Kim; Seung-Myun Baek

This paper proposes a new control protocol, LnCP (Living network Control Protocol), targeted at low implementation cost networking system in a home environment. The protocol is based on a multi-master system and uses a peer-to-peer communication model. The protocol assumed single bus therefore the appliances can be attached to the bus anywhere if the power lines are employed as the network bus. Home appliances linked via LnCP are controlled and monitored at remote place. Every device communicates with each other in packet unit, which has variable length so that the protocol can deal with the devices having the diverse room of RAM resource. The bytes number of the packet header is also variable in order that the new function can be added in the future. The minimum hardware requirements to implement the protocol are 8-bit processing microcomputer including built-in UART, 17 bytes of volatile memory and a few bytes of nonvolatile memory. Therefore it may be embedded in low-cost microcontrollers that are employed in white goods such as refrigerators, washing machines, micro oven ranges and even light switches.

Network configuration technique for home appliances based on LnCP

Koon-Seok Lee; Kyung Chang Lee; Suk Lee; Ki-Tae Oh; Seung-Myun Baek

This paper presents a home network configuration technique including automatic address assignment for multiple appliances and plug-and-play based on LnCP, Living network Control Protocol. A user-friendly graphic user interface is developed to access the home network via a Web browser. The proposed technique is implemented on the Internet refrigerator to manage the appliances on a home network system linked by LnCP.

Parameter optimization of field oriented control with 6 sigma tool

Jinseong Hwang; Kyung-hoon Kim; Yong-Tae Kim; Seung-Myun Baek

The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and sensorless field oriented control (FOC) system became a technology issue in the area of home appliances because they are good at reducing power consumption and acoustic noise. Sensorless FOC consists of speed controller, current controller, position estimator and so on. There are many parameters that have an effect on the performance of the control system. Furthermore, some of these parameters may interact, so it is very difficult to optimize these parameters. In this paper, we introduce the implementation of sensorless FOC using a digital signal processor (DSP), and we propose an optimization method using the multiple responses optimization that is one of the tools of six sigma. This optimization includes factor decision, design of experiment, regression analysis, response surface design, optimization process, and capability analysis. With this optimization, acoustic noise and power consumption is much reduced and speed control performance increases. Experimental results are included.

Performance Evaluation of MAC Layer of LnCP and LonWorks Protocol as Home Networking System

Koon-Seok Lee; Seung-Myun Baek; Yong-Tae Kim; Kyung Chang Lee; Kyoung Nam Ha; Suk Lee

Recently, various home network systems, such as LonWorks, Echonet, and LnCP, etc., are developed to enhance customers comfort and convenience. However, it is not known that performance of any protocol is superior. Hence, this paper evaluates performance of LnCP (Living network Control Protocol) by LG Electronics and LonWorks by Echelon. For this purpose, we have developed simulation model using state diagram of LonWorks and LnCP, and simulation conditions through analysis of message to be generated in the smart home. Also, we evaluate performance, such as maximum transmission delay and mean transmission delay, of both protocols.
