Effects of the customs union with the European Union on the market structure and pricing behaviour of the Turkish manufacturing industry

Turkey established a Customs Union with the European Union in 1996. This study aims to analyse the effect of that Customs Union on the market structure and the pricing behaviour of the Turkish manufacturing industry for the period 1994 to 2000. To that end, the price cost mark-up equation of 12 manufacturing industry sectors is estimated using the import and export ratios with European Union countries together with control variables. A second equation is also estimated for the concentration ratio index, taking the trade ratios with European Union countries as explanatory variables. The estimation method is panel data covering eight years and 12 cross-section units. Estimation outcomes indicate that the export and import ratios of trade with European Union countries have a negative relation with the price cost mark-up in the manufacturing sector. It is concluded that increased imports with union countries have created a positive wealth and efficiency effect upon the Turkish manufacturing industry, due to falling price cost mark-ups. Similarly, the concentration ratio equation estimation outcomes indicate that increased imports with union countries have induced a decline in the concentration ratio for the manufacturing industry during the period in question.

Bu calismanin amaci, Sutton’in batik maliyet endustrilerine yonelik kestirimlerinin gecerliligini panel veri seti kullanarak Turk imalat sanayi icin sinamaktir. Bu bakimdan yogunlasmanin alt sinirlari; gozlemlenebilen endustriye has ozellikler, giris engelleri ve ihracat yogunlugunun sinirdan sapmalarin ortalamasi ve varyansi uzerine etkileri stokastik sinirlar yontemiyle tahmin edilmistir. Teoriye uygun olarak, Tip 2 (icsel batik maliyet) endustrilerin Tip 1(dissal batik maliyet) endustrilere gore daha yuksek bir yogunlasmanin alt sinir degerine sahip olduklari bulgusuna ulasilmistir. Bunun yani sira, siki fiyat rekabeti teorinin aksine hem Tip 1 hem de Tip 2’de alt sinir egrisini asagi dogru cekmektedir. Bu sonuc, fiyat rekabeti arttikca Tip 1, Tip 2A(reklam-yogun icsel batik maliyetli) ve Tip 2R (Ar-Ge yogun icsel batik maliyetli) endustrilerde yaratilan giris engellerinin, fiyat disi rekabetin etkisiyle onemlerinin ortadan kalktigini gostermektedir. Analizin diger bir sonucuna gore, Gumruk Birligi sureci her iki tip endustride yogunlasmanin alt sinirini azaltmaktadir.

1850-1913 Dönemindeki Osmanlı Ham Pamuk Üretimi ve İhracatı Üzerine Düşünceler

The present study attempts to analyze raw cotton production and export in the Ottoman Empire during the second half of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. The emphasis is given to the commercialization of the Ottoman agriculture while the peripheralization process of the Empire is evaluated. In this context, the effect of the world capitalist system on the Ottoman cotton production and export is considered. The problems of the raw cotton production can be explained with the administrative structure of the Empire in general, and the “traditional social order” that the Ottoman central authority had preserved throughout the centuries in particular.
