Exploring the State of Discipline on the Formation of Swift Trust within Global Virtual Teams

Shafiz Affendi Mohd Yusof; Norhayati Zakaria

The study of global virtual teams (GVTs) is important in the Information System (IS) field because GVTs employ a work structure that is heavily dependent on information communication technology. Besides the use of technology, GVTs are also composed of people from different cultural backgrounds. As such, GVTs are challenged not only to collaborate and coordinate projects in a virtual environment, but also to promote a trusting working relationship among culturally diverse members. In this meta-synthesis research, we sampled 3239 documents spanning fifteen (15) years, from 1995-2010 in seven (N=7) top IS journals. Trained coders read through all the articles systematically and coded the contents manually, only 55 useable articles were found that matched three or four of the codes (i.e., GVTs, virtual teams, trust, and swift trust). In the 15-year period, we found a startling result: less than 2% of articles published in the selected top IS journals have discussed this crucial topic. Hence, many more studies are warranted in order for the topic to be fully understood by IS scholars. We present the findings based on two thematic analyses: 1) GVTs vs. virtual teams and 2) GVT and trust and swift trust.

A Conceptual Model for Psychological Empowerment of Telecentre Users

Zahurin Mat Aji; Shafiz Affendi Mohd Yusof; Wan Rozaini Sheik Osman; Nor Iadah Yusop

The Information and Communication Technologies usage among rural communities can be promoted through community telecentres. To date, there is a lack of adequate knowledge in terms of civic participation and empowerment that are related to ICT programs evaluations. This paper proposes a conceptual model for evaluating psychological empowerment of telecentres users based on review of literature. The Zimmerman’s constructs of empowerment theory that include intrapersonal, interactional and behavioural components form the basis of the model. Researchers in the area can used this model to examine the relationship among the components of psychological empowerment for different populations and settings, and create an avenue for understanding individual users of telecentre projects.

Telecentres are physical spaces that provide public access to information and communication technology particularly the Internet for educational, personal, social, and economic development. This paper will closely look into the characteristics of the community that influence the success of telecentres. Although there are a number of influential factors in regards to community characteristics, the emphasis will be on groups and networks factor. Survey was conducted to collect data from users regarding their use of telecentres. In the questionnaire, apart from the users’ profiles, items related to the groups and networks were also included.Sampling was done based on a population comprising of telecentres implemented by state governments, non-governmental organizations, and private sectors. The findings suggest that there are some indications showing certain self belonging, as consequences to the usages of telecentres, to a group and establishing networks which can contribute to the success of telecentres.

A Conflict between Professional vs. Domestic Life? Understanding the Use of ICT in Teleworking for Balance in Work and Family Units

Nafishah Othman; Shafiz Affendi Mohd Yusof; Wan Rozaini Sheik Osman

The advancement of information and communication technologies such as personal computers, the Internet and mobile phones has enabled people to work any time and anywhere. Teleworking, the practice of setting up home offices for employees with appropriate resources for computing and communication, is one example of this new flexibility. Teleworking brings new challenges as well as benefits, and a variety of studies have examined the impact of teleworking in terms of costs and benefits. A major attraction for teleworkers is the control it allows them over the way they structure their work and lives. However, the intrusion of work into the home blurs the boundaries between work and home life and may result in conflict between work and family. This work-family conflict is a direct result of the mutual incompatibility between the demands of work and family roles (Akdere, 2006). The aim of this research is to study the work-family balance of Malaysian teleworkers by exploring the nature of interactions between work and family activities, in order to get a better understanding of the experience of teleworkers in balancing their work and family life. This study will use the work-family border theory (Clark, 2000) to describe the phenomenon, and to explain how individuals manage and negotiate the work and family spheres and the borders between them in order to attain balance.

Women contributions to open source software innovation: A social constructivist perspective

Musyrifah Mahmod; Shafiz Affendi Mohd Yusof; Zulkhairi Dahalin

The popularity of Open Source Software (OSS) is increasing as a platform for modern software innovation with the prominent concept of “freedom”. Freedom in OSS innovation is similar to freedom of speech not in term of price. However, less than 2% of the contributors are women in OSS innovation. Minorities including women are often ignored in OSS innovation process. The gender issues in OSS innovation might be more complex than what it seems, as female contributors are often experience hybrid discriminations, both from the male dominated OSS community and socio-cultural patriarchy. This paper concerns the questions of how innovation is achieved in open source software communities through social constructionist perspectives focusing on feminist views.

Why should I tell you? Applying a culturally attuned privacy theory to understand global customers' online disclosure behaviours in e-commerce transactions

Norhayati Zakaria; Nasriah Zakaria; Shafiz Affendi Mohd Yusof

This paper explores the effect of cultural values and information privacy concerns on the online disclosure behaviours of global customers engaged in e-commerce activities. Hence, the general research question is as follows: In what ways do cultural values and privacy induce or deter online disclosure behaviours? To understand online disclosure behaviours from the cultural and privacy perspectives, the paper draws on two theoretical frameworks. Halls (1976) high-context/low-context cultural theory illuminates how cultural values induce or discourage disclosure behaviours and Petronios (2002) Communication Privacy Management (CPM) theory is useful in explaining the psychological boundaries between disclosure and privacy. Integrating these two theories offers a culturally-attuned privacy theory to understand online disclosure behaviours. Finally, the paper provides perspectives on the implications for e-commerce in its efforts to attract global customers.

Can We Count on You at a Distance? The Impact of Culture on Formation of Swift Trust Within Global Virtual Teams

Norhayati Zakaria; Shafiz Affendi Mohd Yusof

The goal of this chapter is to explore the research question, “How do cultural values impact the formation of swift trust within global virtual teams?” We first introduce the phenomena of global virtual teams and swift trust, and establish a clear understanding of several underlying concepts and definitions such as global virtual teams, swift trust, and in-group and out-group. Next, we look at the concept of in-group vs. out-group based on relevant cultural dimensions from cross-cultural theorists such as Hall (1976), Hofstede (1980), and Trompenaars (1994). Using these theoretical lenses, we examine the impact of cultural values on swift trust formation when people engage in virtual collaboration. We then present several propositions to support the argument that culture does impact the ability to form swift trust within global virtual teams. Finally, we offer some implications and directions for future research.

Investigating the Organizational and the Environmental Issues that Influence the Adoption of Healthcare Information Systems in Public Hospitals of Iraq

Waleed Kh Mohamed AL-Hadban; Kamarul Faizal Hashim; Shafiz Affendi Mohd Yusof

Healthcare information systems (HIS) are an important part of nowadays hospitals as it provides valuable benefits and functionalities for healthcare provision. However, the implementation and adoption of these complex innovations is a challenging task as documented by the literature; therefore, careful planning and consideration to all important factors that influence the adoption process by healthcare staff is required. Governmental reports stated that the usage of HIS systems within public hospitals of Iraq is still low and problematic; that’s why the current study aims at empirically investigating the opinions of healthcare staff regarding the adoption of HIS within public hospitals of Iraq. The current study extended the UTAUT model by integrating additional organizational and environmental factors and for that purpose a questionnaire was developed for obtaining the healthcare staff’s opinions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first empirical study that utilized the UTAUT model to tackle the topic of HIS adoption in Iraq public healthcare sector. The study was able to explain 33% and 46% of the variance within the behavioral intention and the usage of HIS, respectively. The practical findings of this quantitative study can be helpful for healthcare officials to address the actual challenges related to HIS adoption and to set proper strategies for implementing futuristic HIS projects.

Timely trust: The use of IoT and cultural effects on swift trust formation within global virtual teams

Shafiz Affendi Mohd Yusof; Norhayati Zakaria; Nursakirah Ab Rahman Muton

This paper explores the possible use of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the context of global virtual teams (GVTs) and its cultural effect on swift trust formation within GVTs. For multinational corporations (MNCs), it is deemed timely for organizations to capitalize on the IoT environment since it is grounded by the “Global Village” phenomenon. The main research question is: How do GVTs capitalize on IoT to achieve high performing teams, and what is the cultural effect of IoT on swift trust formation in a GVT? In this paper, we develop propositions to explain the different types of tools and services potentially used by GVTs and how these tools can impact the way quick trust is formulated among GVT members when they collaborate at a distance. This conceptual paper will also provide future research directions.

Continuous use of social commerce: Its conceptual relation with E-WOM, commitment and trust

Atyaf Sami; Kamarul Faizal Hashim; Shafiz Affendi Mohd Yusof

The popularity of social media has changed the way of doing business and introduces a new type of commerce known later as social commerce (s-commerce). Within s-commerce, consumer’s loyalty and returning to use have reduced mainly because it is a high competitive environment, which is simply presented by products that proposed and announced rapidly to the market. S-commerce has a magic power called Electronic Word-of-Mouth (E-WOM). E-WOM enables consumers to make a collaboration decision as well as it enable business to reach up their consumers and their network in low cost and short time. Yet, to date, there is limited research that conducted the effect of E-WOM on consumer’s continuous use behavior. Therefore, this study is an attempt to propose a value conceptual model that explains the relationship between e-WOM and continuous use behavior. This study serves not only to clarify the relationship between e-WOM and continuous use, but also to explain the mediating role of trust and commitment in this rel...
