Optimal controller placement in Software Defined Networks (SDN) using a non-zero-sum game

Hemant Kumar Rath; Vishvesh Revoori; Shameemraj M. Nadaf; Anantha Simha

In this paper, we discuss optimal controller placement for Software Defined Networks (SDN) and propose a non-zero-sum game based distributed technique. Our proposed technique is a simple and low-complexity solution which runs in real-time. This can be implemented as an optimization engine at each SDN controller. The optimization engine at each controller computes a payoff function and compares its own payoff value with that of neighbors and takes appropriate decisions such that either new controllers should be added, or existing controllers should be deleted or offloading should be performed between controllers dynamically. We have conducted extensive simulations and verified the usability of the proposed scheme. We also propose a deployment framework which can be implemented using OpenFlow enabled platforms. Use of this technique not only can improve Quality of Services (QoS - minimum packet drops and delay) but also can save cost of deployment and operation.

Network Transform - A Tool Based Approach

Shameemraj M. Nadaf; Hemant Kumar Rath; Anantha Simha

Optimization. We also discuss the performance of the proposed tool through a couple of practical examples and demonstrate significant improvement in cost of deployment and operation post transformation. Along with network transformation, this tool can also be used to analyze chattiness of applications/ports of the existing (As-Is-State) as well as transformed (To-Be-State).

A novel bandwidth aggregation system using multiple physical links

Soma Bandyopadhyay; Arpan Pal; Shameemraj M. Nadaf

This article presents an approach towards aggregating bandwidths of multiple physical layers i.e. transmitting and receiving data simultaneously through the multiple physical interfaces of a fixed computing system. The data over physical layers can communicate over both wired and wireless communication medium at the same time. This proposed bandwidth-aggregation-system (BWA) enhances the download and upload data transmission rates of the application and hence the QoS (quality of service). It resides in the application layer and does not deal with any interaction/modification in the physical and data link layer modules of the interfaces. Numerical results confirm that the enhancement of bandwidth is directly proportional to the summation of data transmission capacity of the physical interfaces and also proportional to the number of physical interfaces having same data transmission capacity. The same concept can be extended to achieve adaptive QoS based on a cross layer communication model.

Novel self-learning based crawling and data mining for automatic information extraction

Arun Kumar A; Hemant Kumar Rath; Shameemraj M. Nadaf; Anantha Simha

In this paper, we propose techniques using a novel combination of self-learning based crawling and rule based data mining. Using the crawling techniques smaller relevant data sets can be obtained pertaining to a domain from multi-dimensional data sets available in on-line as well as off-line sources. We then process the crawled data sets and mine to extract meaningful information. Our techniques are generic in nature and can be used for automatic information extraction in different domains such as biomedical, health-care, enterprise infrastructure planning, etc. The proposed schemes are of reduced time, space and processor complexity due to the assisted and learning nature of the crawling. The data mining is based on configurable classification rules and decision trees, which are scalable and easy to implement in practice. We evaluate our proposed techniques through Java based implementation and integration with TCS in-house enterprise network design tool NetDes.

An open source based network as a service (NaaS) platform for cloud provisioning

Shameemraj M. Nadaf; Hemant Kumar Rath; Arun Kumar A; Samar Shailendra; Anantha Simha

Cloud provisioning is an emerging area and highly embraced by Enterprises. There are several commercial and open source solutions available in the market. We discuss the problem areas in NaaS with respect to the available solutions and our approach to address the concerns by means of an open source middle layer single umbrella platform called “TCS Network as a Service (TNaaS)”. This platform is modular in nature and provides a vendor agnostic NaaS for cloud provisioning. We also provide a lab based evaluation comprising of OpenStack cloud software, TNaaS, open vSwitches and Floodlight Software Defined Network (SDN) controller.

A novel crosslayer-aware transmission queue adaptation system using multiple physical links

Soma Bandyopadhyay; Shameemraj M. Nadaf

Reduction of packet loss in communication network by modifying the transmit queue length is an important research topic. A cross layer aware transmission queue adaptation system of a fixed computing system having multiple physical interfaces is presented here. The proposed system determines the condition of communication channel/network associated with the multiple physical interfaces while transmitting and receiving the data simultaneously through the interfaces. The core functional blocks of the proposed cross layer system modifies the transmission queue length of the active physical interfaces based on their dynamic network condition, and available bandwidth. It does not require any feedback mechanism, as well as intervention of any router or any proxy node. The experimental results show the enhancement in throughput and hence the QoS by using the proposed transmission queue adaptation mechanism using multiple interfaces. A future scope of the present work in detail is also presented here.
