Abstract This review article describes different kinds of surfactants, including nonionic, anionic, cauonic, and zwitteriomc (amphoteric), and discusses their properties. It covers Micellization and the concept of Critical Micellar Concentration (CMC), Solubilization, Cloud and Krafft Points, and the Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance (HLB). It also deals with applications of surfactants such as emulsion polymerization, detergents, wetting agents, dispersing agents, foaming and defoaming agents, and conductivity additives. The report concludes with a discussion of coating problems (surface defects, dispersion problems) and the use of surfactants to reduce or prevent them.
