The Kinneret boat project Part I. The excavation and conservation of the Kinneret boat

Shelley Wachsmann; Kurt Raveh; Orna Cohen

The kinneret boat, dated approximately between the 1st century bc and the 2nd century ad, was discovered in excellent condition in a muddy beach of the sea of galilee (israel). The excavation was carried out with great care due to the fragility of the wood, then the boat was prepared for removal. Fibreglass support frames were inserted between the wooden frames, and the boat was sprayed in sections with polyurethane foam. The excavation area was flooded and the boat floated up the coast and placed in a pool. Polyethylene glycol has been choosen for the conservation treatment. Drawings, photographs, references.
