Measurement and Prediction of Adsorption Equilibria of Quaternary Organic Solutes from Dilute Aqueous Solutions on Activated Carbon

Adsorption equilibria of a mixture of two solutes(pyridine+phenol), three solutes (acetone+pyridine+phenol, 1-butanol+pyridine+phenol) and four solutes(acetone+1-butanol+pyridine+phenol) from dilute aqueous solutions on activated carbon were measured at 25°C. The concentrations of solutes were up to 100 mmol·dm−3, while the initial concentrations of coexisting components were adjusted to 20 mmol·dm−3. The non-ideal adsorbed solution(NIAS) model proposed in a previous work was applied to predict the adsorption equilibrium data for the above multi-solute systems. The NIAS model is found to be useful for estimating the adsorption equilibria of the multi-solute systems using the physical properties of each pure components.
