Magic mirror table for social-emotion alleviation in the smart home

Yuan-Chih Yu; Shing-chern D. You; Dwen-Ren Tsai

In this paper, we propose a prototype of smart furniture for the smart home-a magic mirror table. The proposed system has a camera to capture the viewers facial expression. By analyzing the expressions, the system is able to determine the emotion of the viewer. If the viewer is in a negative emotion, the system then speaks positive sentences and plays the viewers favorite music to alleviate his/her emotion. The experimental results confirm that the system is able to relieve the sad mood of the viewer. In addition, the proposed system can serve as a calendar for event reminding.

Social interaction feedback system for the smart classroom

Yuan-Chih Yu; Shing-chern D. You; Dwen-Ren Tsai

Social awareness is the next-generation challenge of aware computing. The ability to understand and manage social signals from the interaction between teacher and students becomes an emergence need for intelligent service on the smart classroom. Social signals like stress, politeness, and disagreement can reveal important feedback to improve the teaching, learning and assessment method in the learning process delivering. By embedding social intelligence into classroom, we confirmed the benefits as helping teachers know each student learning state, negotiating conflicts between teaching and learning, building social awareness on e-learning system, and reaching class consensus to improve learning satisfaction.

Smart Timetable Plate for Classroom

Yuan-Chih Yu; Shing-chern D. You; Dwen-Ren Tsai

Classroom usually has a timetable plate embedded on the wall near the front door. However, the only purpose for displaying classroom’s timetable cannot fulfill the future digital classroom requirement. They need more automatic, integrated, and intelligent functionality in the classroom environment. Besides, the vision of future smart classroom is to select sustainable technology solutions that have the possibilities of dramatically improving the instructional delivery process and to engage the student in their learning experience. Therefore, the aspiration for providing more intelligent capability will go back to the improvement of classroom environment itself. Within the classroom, how to create a smart space is our goal. By means of introducing smart timetable plate, we can create a new use case for the application of smart classroom. The creative model not only bring the new style school living but also encourage the reform of traditional classroom environment.

Influences of inaccurate estimation of noise variance in sum-product algorithm for DVB-T2 receiver

Shing-chern D. You; Shun-Jie Huang

The low-density parity check decoder in the digital video broadcasting-second generation terrestrial (DVB-T2) receiver usually uses the sum-product algorithm for better bit error performance. However, the algorithm requires estimating noise variance, which is computationally expensive. In this paper, influences of inaccurate estimation of variance are investigated. Based on the simulation results, it is confirmed that a constant SNR may be used in the algorithm with acceptable performance.

Smart Door: A Ubiquitous Collaboration System for Home Activities in the Smart Home

Yuan-Chih Yu; Shing-chern D. You; Dwen-Ren Tsai

This paper describes a smart home system consisting of Smart Door Porch and a home portal. Smart Door Porch uses cameras, an RFID (radio-frequency identification) reader, and a touch panel for home security as well as the at-home awareness of each family member. The home portal uses Open Services Gateway initiative (OSGi) framework and Java EE as the middleware to provide services including home activity, home calendar, and home collaboration map. The home collaboration map, based on the Google map, shows the locations of family members on the map with the aid of the GPS-enabled mobile devices carried by them. With the mobile devices, the proposed system supports ubiquitous collaboration among family members. Experimental results based on scenario simulations confirm that the proposed system is able to provide better services for family members in home collaboration.

Smart Door Portal

Yuan-Chih Yu; Shing-chern D. You; Dwen-Ren Tsai

This paper describes the concept about “Smart Door Portal”. From the view of implementation, it based on the gate and cooperates with the home information system to provide smart location service. The idea somewhat likes the web portal which provide a centralized façade for home service. By way of combining virtual and physical door control, the members of home change their way for the home communication. Due to mobile technological help on the voice and image transmission, the members in home can converse with the other members outside the home as if he is at home. As a result, the perception will get beyond the home and the relationship between home members will be more versatile. The service from the smart home will be ubiquitous

A Remote Surveillance Model for Appliance Control

Yuan-Chih Yu; Shing-chern D. You; Dwen-Ren Tsai

Remote appliance control is an important vision for the smart home. Even in the next few decades, it is inevitable that conversional appliances and smart appliance will coexist together to help people live better. For this reason, this research proposed a remote control model for the conversional appliances to integrate with smart home environment. In this model, a smart home portal combined with video surveillance system was used to realize the appliance control. Total control cycle is base on what you see is what you have done. The main benefits of this model come from the mature technology, simple design, light-weight architecture, and practicable for implementation.

Automatic chord generation system using basic music theory and genetic algorithm

Shing-chern D. You; Po-Sheng Liu

To aid amateur music composers and lovers, we develop an automatic chord generation system. The inputs to the system are the main melody and chords in exemplar songs. Then, the system will provide the generated chords similar to the chords in the exemplars. Inside the system, we use the genetic algorithm to find suitable variations of chords from the exemplars. The subjective listening test confirms that the developed system has some merits over commercial systems.

Implementation of LDPC decoder for L1 signaling in DVB-T2 transmission frame

Shing-chern D. You; Shun-Jie Huang

The L1 signaling part of the DVB-T2 system uses punctured low-density parity check (LDPC) codes. This paper provides some implementation details regarding decoding punctured LDPC codes. The implemented program can successfully decode digitalized DVB-T2 signal from a generator.

Magic mirror table with social-emotion awareness for the smart home

Yuan-Chih Yu; Shing-chern D. You; Dwen-Ren Tsai

Unlike office workplace, home environment emphasizes family atmosphere more than work efficiency. Therefore, the awareness of social emotion between home members becomes an important step for designing intelligent service on the smart home system. By embedding the ability of social-emotion awareness into the mirror table, a magic mirror as the fairytale story told can be realized. We addressed the benefits such as social-emotion awareness, positive word inspiration, alleviating negative emotions, and affairs reminding.
