Graphics and live video are widely employed in remotely-controlled systems like industrial plants. Interaction with live video is, however, more limited compared with graphics as users cannot interact with objects being observed in the former. Object-Oriented Video techniques are described allowing object-oriented interactions, including the use of real-world objects in live video as reference cues, direct manipulation of them, and graphic overlays based on them, which enable users to work in a real spatial context conveyed by the video. Users thereby understand intuitively what they are operating and see the result of their operation.

Abstract A new tension control system for the hot finishing mill, a “looperless” system, was developed. This system detects inter-stand tensions by applying measured data for the rolling process to a newly developed tension equation. The rotation speed of the roll-drive motors is controlled to achieve a desired tension. Experiment on a hot finishing line showed the tension could be controlled within 0.1 kg/mm 2 . Operation was very stable in the rolling of more than 100 strips.

A computer control system has been developed to save energy in the operation of multi-zone furnace, which heats hot continuously casting blooms. The system determines an optimal temperature trajectory of the bloom so as to minimize total fuel consumption under the actual tracking schedule. The total fuel consumption is predicted by using a heat exchange model. The system regulates the zone temperature so that the bloom temperature coincides with the trajectory. From the actual operation with this system it is found that the temperature deviation of the extracted blooms is less than 15 °C from the desired value and that the avarage fuel consumption is reduced by 10 % from that of manual operation.
