We live in an era where our view of school is reduced by a superficial public conversation. In this context, the complexity of the educational process and the debate over the purpose of schooling is lost. This book brings together leading scholars of education to analyze these issues and engage the public in different ways of looking at school.

In the Western tradition of writing about, researching, and representing Islam, Europeans have consistently positioned Muslims as the irrational, fanatic, sexually enticing, and despotic others. This portrayal, as many scholars have argued, has been as much about Western anxieties, fears, and self-doubts as it has about Islam. After 9/11, along with the continuing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the way images of Islam have been embedded in the American consciousness becomes extremely important to everyday life. With these concerns in mind, we examine the educational practices—defined broadly to include both schooling and media pedagogy—that help construct these ways of seeing.

In 1990, Joe was finishing his second book, Teachers as Researchers: Qualitative Inquiry as a Path to Empowerment. As we had just bought a new Mac, the first word processing computer with a hard drive, I offered to type the book for him. In those days, word processing was still quite cumbersome, and the nuances of cutting, pasting, and saving, didn’t always work well. Long story short, after the book came out, Joe noticed that I had missed an entire chapter. I was embarrassed; he was depressed, so I said I would do anything to make it up to him.
