SKIN AND BULK CORROSION PROPERTIES OF DIE CAST AND THIXOCAST AZ91D MAGNESIUM ALLOY IN 0.05M NaCl SOLUTION

Abstract Skin and bulk corrosion properties of AZ91D-DC (die cast), AZ91D-SFTC (billets solidified freely and thixocast) and AZ91D-ESTC (electromagnetically stirred billets and thixocast) magnesium alloy specimens were studied in 0.05 M NaCl solution by scanning reference electrode technique (SRET) at 23 °C and by electrochemical polarization at 25 °C. For all the specimens tested, the corrosion resistance of the skin is inferior to that of the bulk. Furthermore, the corrosion current at the centre of the die cast specimen is much higher than those of the thixocast specimens, while there is no remarkable difference between their skins. Microstructural examination of specimens has been permitted to establish some relation to their corrosion behaviour. Les propriétés en corrosion de la peau et du centre de pièces en alliage de magnésium AZ91D moulées sous pression en phase liquide (AZ91D-DC) et en phase semi-solide à partir de billette solidifiée librement (AZ91D-SFTC) et brassée électromagnétiquement (AZ91D-ESTC) ont été étudiées dans une solution de 0.05 M NaCl à l’aide d’une sonde électrochimique à balayage à 23 °C et de la polarisation électrochimique à 25 °C. Pour tous les spécimens analysés, la résistance à la corrosion de la peau est inférieure à celle du centre. De plus, le courant de corrosion au centre du spécimen moulée sous pression est beaucoup plus élevé que ceux des spécimens thixocoulés, alors qu’il n’y a pas de différence remarquable pour la peau. L’examen microstructural des spécimens a permis d’établir certains liens avec leur comportement à la corrosion.
