Electro-opto-mechanical effects in swollen polydomain side chain liquid crystal elastomers

Voltage dependence of transmittance and shape changes of polydomain side chain liquid crystal elastomers (SCLCEs) swollen with a low molecular weight liquid crystal (LMWLC), 4-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), have been investigated in detail. The electrooptical effect response is faster than that of the electromechanical effect by about 12 times. Due to the optical and mechanical effects arising simultaneously under the application of an electric field, swollen polydomain SCLCEs are promising for application such as soft material actuators with electrooptical effects.
