Tetrakis(2,6-diethylphenyl)digermene (1b) has been synthesized and its molecular structure determined: (1) the GeGe bond length is 2.213(2) A and (2) the molecule has a twist angle of 11° about the GeGe bond and an out-of-plane bending angle of 15° at the germanium atoms.

Abstract The stereochemical course of the titled photo-conversion to yield Z-and E-substituted disilenes and the photochemical and thermal interconversion of the latter two compounds are described.

Abstract The title intermediate ( 3a ) is produced on photolysis of hexakis(2,6-diethyl-phenyl)cyclotrigermane ( 1 ) or bis(2,6-diethylphenyl)bis(trimethylsilyl)germane ( 4 ) as evidenced by trapping experiments, and thermally dimerizes to tetrakis(2,6-diethyl-phenyl)digermene ( 2a ). Diarylgermylenes such as 3a do not form stable triethylamine adducts (e.g. 5a ) as has been previously reported.

Abstract Reductive coupling of 1- t -butyl-2,2-dimesityl-1,1,2-trichlorodisilane employing Li-naphthalenide furnishes, on oxygenation or hydrolysis of the reaction mixture, products ( 8 - 11 ) that may arise from insertion of oxygen into or the addition of water across the Si-Si bonds of 1,3-di- t -butyl-2,2,4,4-tetramesityltetrasilabicyclo-[1.1.0]butane ( 3 ).

The X-ray crystal structures of two isomeric cyclotrisilanes, cis–cis-and cis–trans-1,2,3-tri-t-butyl-1,2,3-trimesitylcyclotrisilanes (1a) and (1b), respectively, have been determined; the structure of (1b) reveals that one Si–Si bond is significantly longer than the other two in agreement with the recently reported chelotropy of photo-cleavage of (1b) to give E-and Z-1,2-di-t-butyl-1,2-dimesityldisilenes (2a) and (2b), respectively.
