Abstract The tribe Plectrothripini is redefined with examination of its systematic relationships. Keys are provided to the ten genera and forty‐seven species in this tribe; one genus and eighteen species are newly described; one genus and two species are newly synonymized; two genera, Chiridothrips and Eurytrichothrips, are here removed from this tribe. The species of the tribe occur throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world; seventeen species are recorded from the Oriental Region, seventeen species from the Neotropical Region, ten species from the Afrotropical Region, two from Australia and one from the Pacific. They seem to be fungus‐feeders, being found mainly under the bark of trees or on dead branches.

Members of Thrips genus-group from Japan are reviewed, and 45 species in seven genera are recognized. Nine species and one genus are newly described: Stenchaetothrips amamiensis sp. n., S. dentatus sp. n., S. pleioblasti sp. n., Thrips nonakai sp. n., T. ogasawarensis sp. n., T. shiranesanus sp. n., T. syringae sp. n., T. typicus sp. n. and Tsutsumiothrips ryukyuensis gen. et sp. n. Moreover, 14 species of two genera are newly recorded from Japan: S. langkawiensis Ng & Mound, S. undatus Wang, Thrips alni Uzel, T. aspinus Mound & Masumoto, T. brevicornis Priesner, T. brunneus Ishida, T. extensicornis Priesner, T. minutissimus Linnaeus, T. pini (Uzel), T. subnudula (Karny), T. sukki Bhatti & Lee, T. trehernei Priesner, T. urticae Fabricius and T. vitticornis Karny. A previously recorded species, Stenchaetothrips bambusae (Shumsher) is excluded from the Japanese fauna.

Five new species associated with the inflorescences of Macaranga trees are described in the Asian genus Dolichothrips Karny. Four of these, chikakoae, eriae, fialae and utae, are from the Malaysian region where they are involved in the pollination of these trees. The fifth, franae, is described from the Hawaiian Islands but is probably introduced from Southeast Asia, and this species appears also to be a pollinator of its host plant. In contrast, little is known of the biology of the many species of Dolichothrips from India. However, D. indicus (Hood) is here interpreted as a variable, polyphagous and widespread species around the tropics, with D. nesius Stannard and D. pumilus Priesner placed as new synonyms. D. reuteri (Karny) from Australia, is also not restricted to Macaranga, and D. flavipes (Moulton) from Taiwan is here considered a new synonym of reuteri. An identification key is provided to 15 species of this genus, but this excludes five species for which specimens were not available. D. citricrurus Moulton, described from Ethiopia, is transferred to Apelaunothrips Karny.

The tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca, which is known as a vector of TSWV and Pantoea ananatis causing center rot of onion, and a serious pest of tobacco, cotton and groundnuts in North America, is newly recorded from the bulbs of Narcissus pseudonarcissus in Honshu, mainland Japan. Two strains were found in Shimane Prefecture. One strain was collected from a bulb produced in Niigata Prefecture in the winter of 2002, and the other was collected from bulbs produced in Fukushima Prefecture in the autumn of 2002. F. fusca can be easily distinguished from other members of this genus in Japan.

Summary The wide spread genus Psalidothrips Priesner (=Callothrips Ananthakrishnan; syn. n.) is redefined and its relationships discussed. Five new species are added to the genus: armatus sp. n., longiceps sp. n., longistylus sp. n., pitkini sp. n. and seticornis sp. n. P. ascitus (Ananthakrishnan) comb. n. is transferred from the synonymous genus Callithrips. The male of P. simplus Haga is recorded and described for the first time. A key is provided to the seventeen species now included in the genus.

Abstract. The Old World species of the genus Pygothrips are studied. Nine species are included. Four of them are previously known: P.mikrommatos (Moulton) from Fiji, P. pygus (Mound), P. rugicauda Hood and P. shavianus (Bagnall) from Australia. A further five species are new to science: P. breviceps from Japan, P. flavomaculatus from Obi Is., Indonesia, P. fusculus from Ogasawara Is., northwestern Micronesia, Japan, P. postocellaris from Fiji and P. vicinus from the Ryukyus, Japan. A key to species is provided.

Summary The relationships of the phlaeothripine tribe Apelaunothripini is discussed. Four genera and thirteen species are recorded from the Philippines, including the following two new genera and nine new species: Apelaunothrips cephalicus sp. nov., A. fasciatus sp. nov., A. flavicornis sp. nov., A. marginalis sp. nov., A. philippinensis sp. nov., A. rostratus sp. nov., A. simpliceps sp. nov., Lizalothrips luzonensis gen. and sp. nov., Paradexiothrips bispinosus gen. and sp. nov. Keys are provided to the four genera included in the Apelaunothripini, and to the ten Apelaunothrips species from the Philippines.

In Japan, no members of Rhamphothrips genus-group have hitherto been known, but three species of this group are here newly described from Japan: Exothrips yaeyamanus sp. n., Rhamphothrips nemunoki sp. n. and R. ogasawarensis sp. n. Moreover, an uncertain species of Exothrips is recorded from Okinawa on Poaceae.

Pseudodendrothrips maculatus sp.n. is described from Morus leaves in Japan, and the following five species of Dendrothripinae are newly recorded from Japan: Leucothrips furcatus Hood, L. nigripennis Reuter, L. piercei (Morgan), Pseudodendrothrips darci (Girault) and P. lateralis Wang. Moreover, P. bhattii is newly recorded from Taiwan. An identification key to Pseudodendrothrips species from Japan and Taiwan is provided, and the metathoracic pleural area is compared between several Dendrothripinae genera.
