Optical properties of N‐vinylcarbazole crystals

Optical measurements were made on a N‐vinylcarbazole single crystal. An Urbach tail was observed in the absorption spectrum and the determination of refractive index in the transparent region was made from the reflectivity measurement. A three‐line Gaussian structure was found from the emission spectrum, which seems to be associated with quantum states of the N–C stretching vibrational mode. This interpretation is basically supported by both charge distribution mapping of NVC calculated by HMO and oscillator strength calculated from the overlap integral of vibrational modes. A proposed molecular arrangement of NVC crystal is presented through an analysis of the luminescence spectrum.
