Designing clothing with good thermal functional performance is very demanding and time-consuming if we follow traditional design methods. An innovative method consisting of a CAD system, allowing the designer to perform multi-style clothing thermal functional design on a customized virtual human body, is presented in this paper. The new functionalities of the virtual system provide the abilities to perform intelligent design of different clothing styles and materials for different body parts according to individual design requirements, namely design of various categories of clothing, such as hat, coat, trousers, gloves and shoes in the same design scheme. The designed clothing can be worn on a virtual human body and set in various wearing scenarios. The thermal behaviors in the human body-clothing-environment are simulated to predict the thermal performance of clothing and thermal response of the human body at multi-parts. 2D/3D visualization and animation of the simulation results are presented to help the designers to preview and determine whether the thermal performance of clothing is satisfactory and then obtain feedback to improve their designs iteratively.

This paper reports a study on the effect of moisture management in the design of cold protective clothing. In this research, two kinds of clothing systems were tested, a traditional clothing system (clothing A), and a specially designed moisture management clothing system (clothing B). Both clothing systems have the same four-layer structure (underwear, vest, coat, and outer jacket), but with use of different functional fabrics. The experiments were conducted in a climate chamber where the temperature was controlled at —15 °C. Eleven young male subjects took part in wear trial experiments, in which they were dressed in clothing A or B and walked on a treadmill. The humidities and temperatures at the skin surface and at different layers of the clothing system were measured together with measurements of thermal and moisture sensations. The experimental results showed that the moisture management property of fabrics significantly affected the moisture diffusion and temperature distributions in the cold protective clothing systems, and influenced the thermal and moisture sensations.

This paper describes a simulation of the physical processes of coupled heat and moisture transfer in a clothing assembly containing phase change material (PCM). This paper focuses on the analysis of the effect of the PCM. The results of simulation show that the PCM can delay the decrease in temperature of the clothing. The experiment results are also shown in this paper. A reasonable agreement was found when comparing the results of the simulation with the experiment results.
