Practical Application of a Hemagglutination Reaction in Tuberculosis.

Sidney Rothbard; A. S. Dooneief; K. E. Hite

Summary The sera of 216 normal adults and patients with syphilis or non-tuberculous chest diseases were tested for tuberculous antibodies by the hemagglutination reaction: 203 showed no reactions; 12 had positive reactions in serum dilution of 1:2; and one in dilution of 1:4. The sera of 168 patients with active tuberculosis showed 92% positive reactions in dilutions ranging from 1:8 to 1:512. Sera from 33 apparently cured tuberculous individuals revealed no reactions in 31, and positive reactions in 2 in a serum dilution of 1:2. This hemagglutination reaction is apparently a relatively specific test for active tuberculosis.

Amyloidosis and renal lesion induced in mice by injection with Freund-type of adjuvant.

Sidney Rothbard; Robert F. Watson

Summary A method has been described for the induction of amyloidosis in mice by injection of the Freund-type adjuvant. The M. butyricum, or oil and emulsifying agent alone were not effective. M. butyricum with either the oil or emulsifying agent was capable of inducing amyloid. N. asteroides or Group A streptococci could be substituted for M. butyricum but the incidence of amyloidosis was less. The present method, as compared with previous ones, requires fewer injections, and it produces a higher incidence of amyloidosis in a shorter time.

Experimental Arthritis in the Albino Rat Produced by a Group A Hemolytic Streptococcus.

Sidney Rothbard

Summary An acute multiple arthritis has been produced in 45 of 51 albino rats by the intravenous injection of a Group A hemolytic streptococcus. In the eyes of 5 rats, an acute monocular purulent endophthalmitis was present. The author wishes to thank Dr. D. M. Angevine for his assistance in this work.
