This paper introduces a joint planning and management optimization approach for cellular networks to limit energy consumption while guaranteeing QoS and minimizing operators Capex and Opex. The modeling framework shows that an effective energy-efficient operation depends on the planning decisions. Conversely, it also shows that planning with energy management operation in view yields more versatile topologies than more traditional models based only on Capex. Results for LTE networks are provided and show that savings up to 65% in energy expenses are possible with slight increases in capital investments.

This paper deals with the joint planning and energy management operation of Wireless Mesh Networks. We claim that energy management should be incorporated at the planning stages to produce an effective energy-management operation. For this, we propose a mathematical framework that takes into account the trade-off of capital expenditures vs. energy-related operational ones when designing the network. We also present results that put into relevance the impact of different coverage policies on energy efficiency.

In this paper we introduce a joint planning and energy management framework for Wireless Mesh Networks. In order to show that power management should be integrated at the planning steps to produce an effective energy-efficient network, we present a mathematical model considering a trade-off between capital and energy-related operational expenses. Results demonstrating the impact of different coverage strategies on the energy efficiency are also showed.

This article proposes a fundamental modeling and optimization framework for the planning of energy-aware wireless networks. The key idea is that in order to produce energy-efficient network operation, energy awareness should be introduced at the planning stage. Cellular as well as mesh wireless examples are considered.

We introduce a novel approach that jointly optimizes planning and management for cellular networks, aiming at limiting the energy expenses while guaranteeing QoS and minimizing operators capital expenses. Results from LTE test networks confirm that an effective energy-efficient operation depends on the planning decisions and show that power savings of up to 54% can be obtained with modest increases in initial investments.
