Development and Validation of a Virtual Environment to Evaluate the Capacity in Executing the Safety Procedures in Recreational Scuba Diving

Luiz Teruo Kawamoto; Silvia Cristina Martini Rodrigues

BACKGROUND Recreational scuba diving courses have safety procedures in their curriculum to be followed in case of emergencies. However, the actual diving is often performed months after the training. Because these procedures are counterinstinctive, when emergencies occur the divers in panic cannot follow them. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thus a virtual environment was developed, presenting several emergency situations that may occur during a recreational dive. It used an Intel(®) (Santa Clara, CA) Core™2 Duo (1.66 GHz, 1 GB RAM) PC and Adobe (San Jose, CA) Fireworks and Adobe Flash 8 for animation and programming. The procedures to be followed were the standards of the Association of Dive Schools. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION This research found that the performance of divers on a questionnaire on diving safety procedures is very different than in the virtual environment.

The Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most common disorder among children in the school. Children with ADHD have more difficulty learning the discipline of mathematics. Recent studies showed that the use of computer games as a tool to aid evaluation of mathematical concepts can provide twice more solutions to problems than conventional methods. Several studies also showed that the colors can significantly affect the attention of children with ADHD. Therefore, this paper describes the development of the computerized game with red-green axis colors to help the assessment the initial concept of math in the children with ADHD. The game developed was produced using Blender 3D graphical tool. The developed game was validated by math teachers. They evaluated if the concept of math were presented clearly and objective. The game also was evaluated by professionals on software development process which assessed the functional requirements. The developed game has criteria recommended by APA (American Psychological Association) to retain the attention of hyperactive and allow the evaluation of their actual knowledge of math concepts.

Many dental clinics are swapping analog x-ray equipment for digital systems to obtain medical images in the search for improvements such as reduced costs and better care of the images and fast response. However it is necessary to analyze if the digital images have quality requirements in order to provide the diagnosis in a similar or superior way to the analog films. The objective of this paper is to analyze the quality of the digitized x-ray diagnostic images in relation to the structures represented. The research was conducted in a dental clinic that was changing the analog x-ray equipment for one digital. The results by means of statistical analysis demonstrated that the digital system has better spatial resolution and better contrast. As a suggestion of future research an analysis by dentists to see if on the day of the clinic, these theoretical advantages are confirmed in better diagnostics.

Instrumental Assistance to the Restorative Dentistry Treatments

Waltraudi Orchulhak Kawamoto; Silvia Cristina Martini Rodrigues; Luiz Teruo Kawamoto

In dental care is necessary to isolate the tooth the oral environment (saliva, tongue, cheek, etc) with some type of retractor. This work aimed to propose a new model of instrumental low cost that assists in dental treatment. The instrumental was virtually designed and tested with the characteristics of the materials used in its manufacture: Solid stainless steel wires of 7 mm, acrylic resin and steel tape. To simulate its functionality was modeled a mouth with the actual measurements via the free software Blender 2.49b. To evaluate the simulation results of the test type black box, where you can observe the operation of the simulator were used. After testing various virtual instruments with the same measurements to assess its performance were made clinically. It was concluded in the simulation and clinical tests that the instrument is stable and performs the removal of anatomical structures adjacent to the tooth, even in cases of patients with positive macroglossia can be used for different types and sizes of arches, in the absence of any tooth can be fixed in any tooth, getting the desired position by professional optimizing the same time.

Detecção da Assimetria Mamária

Silvia Cristina Martini Rodrigues; M. F. A. Veloso; E. L. L. Rodrigues

This article presents the software “DENSIRADS” that organizes mammography image database in accordance with the classified breast density composition described in the BI-RADS (Breast Imaging Reporting and System Date). The methodology used in the “DENSIRADS” allows indicating the lack of symmetry in the mammography density. Nowadays researchers of the area agree that the lack of symmetry between the densities would be an important factor in diagnosis of the breast cancer. The image database used was the MIAS (Mammographic Image Analysis Society), classified by radiologist and available on-line. Sixty images had been used, being 15 pairs (30 images) classified with asymmetry and 15 pairs (30 images) classified as normal. From that 15 pairs of asymmetry images, 9 were cancer cases. The sensitivity of the DENSIRADS for the MIAS database to asymmetry images was of the 78 % and specificity of the 75%.
