Searching the EAGLE Epigraphic Material Through Image Recognition via a Mobile Device

This demonstration paper describes the mobile application developed by the EAGLE project to increase the use and visibility of its epigraphic material. The EAGLE project European network of Ancient Greek and Latin Epigraphy is gathering a comprehensive collection of inscriptions about 80i¾?% of the surviving material and making it accessible through a user-friendly portal, which supports searching and browsing of the epigraphic material. In order to increase the usefulness and visibility of its content, EAGLE has developed also a mobile application to enable tourists and scholars to obtain detailed information about the inscriptions they are looking at by taking pictures with their smartphones and sending them to the EAGLE portal for recognition. In this demonstration paper we describe the EAGLE mobile application and give an outline of its features and its architecture.

Una nuova iscrizione monumentale dagli scavi di piazza Madonna di Loreto

The archaeological excavations in Piazza Madonna di Loreto, due to the construction of the new metro line in Rome, led to the discovery of a group of buildings dating from the reign of Hadrian, probably to be identified with the Athenaeum. In one of these, transformed during the Middle Ages into a workshop for melting metals, was found a new fragment of marble with monumental letters, belonging to an imperial inscription already known since a long time (CIL, VI 966 = 31215). The new fragment confirms the reconstruction of the epigraphic text, but the traditional interpretation as dedication of the temple of Trajan and his wife Plotina is possibly to be revised. Gli scavi per la costruzione della nuova linea della metropolitana di Roma in Piazza Madonna di Loreto, hanno portato alla scoperta di un complesso di ambienti di eta adrianea forse identificabile con l’Athenaeum. In uno di questi ambienti, trasformato in epoca medievale in officina per la fusione dei metalli, e stato rinvenuto un nuovo frammento di iscrizione monumentale, verosimilmente proveniente dal vicino Foro di Traiano, che appartiene a un’epigrafe gia nota da tempo (CIL, VI 966= 31215). L’integrazione del testo ne esce confermata, ma la sua tradizionale interpretazione come dedica del tempio di Traiano e Plotina e forse da rivedere.
