The International Year of Cooperatives (2012) was established by the United Nations (UN) to highlight the importance of cooperatives for social and economic development. Hence, considering the role of cooperatives in the Brazilian rural sector, this article makes an analysis of scientific literature on cooperatives and cooperativism concerning the main journal of the Brazilian Society of Economics, Administration and Rural Sociology (Sober), the Journal of Economics and Rural Sociology (RESR). The aim is to determine the intensity of work on the topic as well as identify the main researchers and theoretical approaches. The findings showed that there are a small number of articles related to the topic and their references are mainly composed by economists. The analysis also concluded that the focus was related to economic issues like performance and profitability. Finally, we can also conclude that the key theoretical approaches of these scientific works under investigation rely primarily on Local Productive Arrangements and on The New Institutional Economics.

This study aimed to assess the effect of an exogenous change in income, due to the 1992’reform of Brazilian social insurance for rural workers, on the structure of rural homes in Brazil. We assessed the impact of the increase in the income of the elderly on the composition of homes, regarding possible changes in family arrangements. In particular, this study considered household arrangement (or household composition) as an endogenous variable, contrasting to the existing literature that considers it an exogenous variable to the economic environment of the household. The objectives of the study were: to estimate differences in family arrangement between families with an elderly member eligible to receive the reform benefits, and families without an elderly member, before (1989) and after (1998) the reform; to assess how the differences in family arrangements can be explained by the changes caused by the rural social insurance reform; and to assess if the effects of the presence of a member eligible for retirement in family arrangements vary as a function of the gender of the beneficiary. The importance of the study is that its results might help understand the primary and secondary impacts of a policy that aims to increase the income of a growing segment of the Brazilian population: the elderly. According to the results, it is possible to state a statistically significant impact on household arrangements due to the 1992 rural social insurance reform. This is showed by the differences in family composition between the groups that are eligible and non-eligible for benefits of the reform. Additionally, when the most predominant type of family composition is considered, this impact is associated to the gender of the eligible member, that is, when the eligible individual is a female, the household composition tends to be more complex than for non-eligible males or females.

In the region of Corede Missoes, family agroindustries were constituted with the support of the public sector and institutions with which they relate and develop their productive activities. Since the year 2014, the region of Missoes has been implementing the Local Productive Arrangement Development Plan of the Family Agroindustry, which, in essence, has a theoretical and historical origin in neoclassical economic theory, which reproduces the logic of the industrial economy. With this in view, the purpose of this study was to analyze how the production of family agroindustries in the region of Missoes is influenced by the industrial logic of the concept of Local Productive Arrangement. We reached our objective through field research, that was based on theoretical reference on local productive arrangements and family agroindustry. We identified that the productive activity is, mainly, artisan. The logic of economies of scale, intrinsic to the theoretical model of APL, cannot establish a relation with the productive dynamics of family agroindustries, since they have low production, absence of division of labor and specialization. Thus, the attempt of industrialization takes away the essence of family activity by which families produce their products in an environment where there is no predominance of technique over know-how. The intention is that this study can serve as an interpretation that goes beyond the concept of Local Productive Arrangement (APL) and, at the same time, serves as a basis for the construction or improvement of public policies that better contemplate the reality of the production of family agroindustries.
